Review: Canon XSi Camera
« on: April 06, 2009, 11:43:39 AM »
I have used Canon cameras for years, starting with the Canon AE1 that I bought while in the Air Force in 1976. I've always appreciated the quality and the feel of their cameras, so naturally when they came out with the digital SLRs I started buying them also. I started with the EOS Rebel 300D, the 6 megapixel dslr. I eventually moved up to the 400D, 8 megapixel, however I didn't move up when they brought out the 10 meg version. They had made a couple of software changes and hardware changes in the camera, and many of the people I know felt it was a step backward. When they brought out the new XSi, 12 megapixel camera I went and checked it out. Canon had righted it's wrongs, and had delivered on their reputation.
For all of us that take pictures of our families, our cars, the runs and meets that we do, I don't think that you can find a different camera in the price range that will do so many things. The ability to change lenses, unlike the pocket digitals makes this a great choice. The menu options allow you to take a variety of formats, variety of colors, as if you had different filters on the lens. You can shoot manually, doing your own focus, or let the camera do it for you. The menus are much easier to use, unlike the dslrs of the past. For the price, currently under $750, if you can afford it, this is a great camera and will serve you well for years to come.

Nice review.  What lenses are you using with it?

Both my brother and I are Canon users.  I sarted out with a Nikon N65 (film) and then went to Sony (8mp) digital.  I sold the Sony and let Timmy (Joe's other son) use the Nikon.  My brother has the Canon XT (6.2mp) and has gotten a lot of use out of it.

I made the switch to Canon when the 30D (8mp) came out and used it for about 3 years.  I'm currently in the process of selling it since I upgraded to the 5D Mark II (21mp) back in February.  I'll write a review on it after I use it a little more.  I only have about 2000 images from it so far and am still figuring out the HD video functions.

Right now I'm using the 18-55 that came with it, along with a 75-300. I found a place on a certain auction site that allowed ef lenses to be used on the camera, so I am also using my old 135mm, my 28mm and a 80-200mm zoom. These all have to be used in manual mode, but I still like the range I have. Wish I could have afforded the 5D Mark II , just want to do things with the car right now and the price was a bit steep for a non professional photographer such as myself.

I'll do reviews on these too, but for now, I'll just mention what I'm using:

An  EF 50mm f/1.2L USM and an EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.

I'm really dissapointed that the EF-S lenses won't fit on the 5D M2, I have an EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM that I'm really fond of.  I'm just going to give it to my brother.

Since I'm moving on to bigger and better lenses as well, I'm going to sell all of my smaller stuff.  If you or someone you know wants something listed let me know an I'll work out a deal.  It's all in really good condition (I treat my camera's like I treat my car):

Canon 30D with manuals, cables, CD's, wired remote, 512mb CF card, battery, charger and carrying strap.
Canon EF 28-105 f/4-5.6 USM
Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM
Canon EF 75-300 f4-5.6 III USM

If you can find someone that wants it all, I'll through in a case with assorted assorted 58mm filters.  It would be a great set-up for a budding beginner.

I'll stop post whoring now...
