ATTN: GPS Navigation users
« on: April 15, 2009, 04:22:21 PM »
Hyper Viper called and told me the latest trend on cars stolen with built-in GPS Navigation systems.  The thief steals the car and hit's the HOME button on the NAV system, call his buddies to meet at the home, once he gets there, robs the place.  He gets in with the garage door opener.

Do this...  Set your home location on your GPS to a location about 2 miles away from your house and a few streets over.  That way in case it is stolen, they can't locate your home.  Don't set it down a few houses either as a thief would just have to drive the street pressing the garage door button.

Thanks for the good info. I immediately deleted the "home" info out of the GPS on my wife's PU. It was our only vehicle with built in GPS. Hopefully, she will still be able to find her way home......

Ah, pretty dumb thieves if they just can not open glove box and read the address on the registration.

I would love them to steal my car and drive to my house as I do not have a garage door opener but would race home ( i know I do not have a car, but I would call Deepblue) and wait on the porch with a 45 ACP, dig a hole in the back around 6 foot deep and problem solved.

Hey aren't you like a doctor or something?  Couldn't you just give them an overdose of insulin and then sign the death certificate.  Then you wouldn't have to watch someone come over and dig a hole for you.  Besides if it was 6 foot deep you would need a ladder just to get out of the hole.  What if you didn't have a ladder and there was a cave in?  You might get nominated for a Darwin award.

Why not set your GPS home to the local police station?

All great ideas.  But, unfortunately, since they are now on the Internet, a nice blueprint for poor Chuckdoc's prosecution.

Why not set your GPS home to the local police station?

And Deep, I think this is one of those Internet e-mail spam stories.  I've personally received this warning (unsolicited) 3 times in the past year.  Sure it's possible that this could actually happen, but are you going to stop doing everything you want to do "just in case" something bad happens?  You'll never put your gun down and come out of the basement if you listen to all these "advice warnings".

So my opinion, which I'm providing here because everyone asked for it :D, is....... BAH who cares, just live your life, have some fun, and get good insurance!

Well, setting a home to a Police Station is a good idea.  If crooks were smart, they wouldn't be stealing your car, if they did find the registration, they probably wouldn't know how to read or use a map.  Getting point to point verbal instructions from a GPS would simplify getting to a house to rip it off.   If you communte to DC and won't see your car for another 8 hours, that would be a good chance to rip off a place.

I did a SNOPES.COM query and didn't produce anything.

Yes, I'm not disputing that it's possible, and I would wager that this exact scenario probably has happened a few times in the past.  I'm just saying that you can't live your life in fear and always worrying about what the bad guys might do to you.  Sure, some things are logical like don't hang around on the wrong side of town at 2 in the morning, or golf in a thunderstorm, but there are so many things to worry about these days, you will never get a chance to enjoy your life.  For example, our cars are pretty tiny, but quite safe.  Although if you were hit head on by an SUV or Pick-up, you would probably get killed.  So, should you sell your Sol and buy an SUV, just in case?  Of course not.  And that's a pretty good example of what worrying about what might happen, can change the way you behave, and in this case, deprive you of ever enjoying your Sol again.

Once again, just my opinion, and being from rural Canada (translation - Red Neck), perhaps I have a different outlook on things than a US "big city" dweller would have. :idk:

Great post KWhale.  All your points are dead on, I agree with every last point you make!  When we purchased "Miss Red Eagle" I was quite aware of one of your points, and that being that any small vehicle will afford you less protection in case of serious accident.  However, on the other hand, life is to be lived, so enjoy it, just be aware of potential limits.  We have never had a vehicle with GPS Navigation, and I don't fault those who do.  My son in St. Louis has it in one of his vehicles.  I personally would have no use for it myself, but am glad that DeepBlueGXP began this thread to point out some of the dangers.  Very good points you all make.

Smart thieves have being doing this for years to women who have there purses stolen, a lot less high tech, open wallet check address, go there use keys from purse to unlock door, rob house, go out have nice dinner with stolen credit card. The best advice from this is try not to set yourself up as a victim, but stuff happens.

I am here monitoring but not responding.  I just found out our government (DHS) has released a report on terrorism to all state police stating who to watch as a threat.  This includes but not limited to, gun owners, conservatives, single issue organizations, anti abortion  groups (interesting as this would be the Catholic Church), returning veterans from Iraq or Afghanistan and people against illegal immigration (interesting as this translates to people who believe in the rule of law).

So I am seriously not posting anywhere about firearms.

This is how Hugo Chavas started out.

Sorry for the hijack but I now find the need to censor my thoughts until this left wing dictator is out of office.

Joe, if this offends some of our Democrat(pinko, pusillanimous pantywasted commies)  friends, please just delete the whole thing.

I hope you are leaving in a vertical position, and not rolled up in a shower curtain . . . .

Reminds me of my favorite line from "Legally Blonde."

Father to earnest young man picking up hottie daughter for a date:

"I've got a .45 and a shovel!  They'll never find you, you got that?!"
