Drag Racing Question(s)
« on: May 19, 2009, 04:41:32 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm heading out to the strip tomorrow to lay down some more 1/8th mile (all we have here) times.  Last time, I only got two runs in and it was super busy.  I'm hoping tomorrow will not be as crowded.

Anyways, my questions:

1.) For a stock car, how bad of wear / tear does drag racing do to our LNFs?  Almost everyone I tell that I plan to drag race the car on occasion says to me, "Why do you want to ruin your car?"  I don't understand this logic.  This is a SPORTS CAR.  I have the GXP version.  It is meant to be flogged (at least I think so) occasionally.  Do these people have some clout?  I mean obviously there are chances something could go wrong, but I feel that with a stock car this is pretty low IMO.  Am I right here?

2.) What do I need to launch at?  I keep trying to figure out my launch on the street and it isn't working.  Do I put the clutch in just a little past the friction point and then slip it out like I normally would?  Do I slip out really fast?  Last time I tried holding my revs at 2500 RPMs and then slipping it out fast while giving full throttle.  It felt like the car fell on its face, and I ended up with a 2.4 60'.

3.) I'm thinking I should be able to hit a 9.2 in the 1/8th mile.  I have trapped about 77 MPH, which lines up with a Mustang I have read getting 9.2s, but I just want to be sure.

Thanks for any help, and for listening lol.

I've been launching with TC off as well, but those times are not realistic for me to achieve, as you have a lot more mods than I do.  I'm trying to get an idea of what is time I need to be hitting in the car while its in stock form.

It's all in the launch,  drop your rear tire pressure to 19 lbs (don't forget to top them off before you leave the track)  Launch with as high an RPM you can without boiling the tires.  You can slip the clutch (more wear) or dump it your choice, which ever you feel comfortable with.  Good luck, let us know how you did.

Air up your front tires to 35 PSI also.  And after each run, let the car run for 2 minutes to cool down the turbo...  Don't drive through the water pit as you have street tires and you'll be slinging water on the start.

Thanks for the pointers fellas. When you say dump the clutch, do you mean to just let my foot off completely and give full throttle?

Also, can any of you comment on question 1?  I really need ammo for my fiance and family lol.

Well it certainly won't lengthen the lifespan of your clutch. That's likely to be what takes the brunt of stress racing, everything else is probably pretty comparable to "spirited" driving on the street.

Yeah, that's pretty close to my plan as well. I'm not going to buy a tune till I've got enough money and leave set aside so I can go about replacing the clutch...I figure I'll need one after that lol.
