Sound Deadening Showdown - Door Panel Install
« on: June 27, 2009, 04:19:58 PM »
Don (Rudeboy) Did the sound deading to only my doors .Just driving home I can tell the differance in noise and sound Quality. Will have the floorand back wall done. If you  don't like hearing all the sounds from Outside ,think about getting it done .   :yay:

Glad you're happy with the results. If we do the floor soon I'll be able to verify the dimensions for rough cut kits for this vehicle to make things a little easier for folks. Just to be clear though, this is strictly DIY. You got special "neighbor" treatment as thanks for letting me see if it would be feasible to mold fiberglass covers for the access holes :)

Sound Deadening Showdown - Door Panel Install

So can we ship to Canada yet or are you still doing development work on the product?

 Obvious next questions, prices?
Been shipping to Canada via USPS and it has been working well - much smoother than UPS when it comes to crossing the border.

Doors are simple:
12 CLD Tiles @ 2.45 - $29.40
1 roll Extruded Butyl Rope @ 8.75 - 8.75
1 sheet MLV (split between the two) @ 38.95 - 38.95
1/2 sheet 1/4" CCF @ 15.00 - 15.00
2 Velcro Patches, adh. both sides, 2-pack (cut each in half) @ 3.25 - 6.50
1 8oz. can HH-66 Vinyl Cement @ 7.50 - 7.50

Sub Total: $106.10
Shipping: depends on your locations.

Optional: 2" Maple roller for the CLD tiles - you want a roller, but there's nothing magic about the ones I sell. 1 can of HH-66 will be plenty to do the entire car.

Remove the door panel. Peel off the moisture barrier and throw it away. Peel off the stock vibration damper from the exterior door skin since it isn't all that robust and it's best to have the CLD Tiles make direct contact with door skin. Stuff some Extruded Butyl Rope between the exterior door skin and the side collision intrusion prevention bars. Covder the top side with some aluminum foil or plastic sheeting.

Apply 3 CLD Tiles above the center of the door and two below. Roll them down. Install your access hole covers and run a bead of EBR between the covers and the interior door skin. Attach the covers with self tapping screws or something similar.

I strongly recommend fabricating something to seal the access holes on the interior door skin. Aluminum is good. Fiberglass is good. I experimented with making fiberglass covers from molds I took from 1 LIL NDN's Solstice, but they are so labor intensive to produce that I'd have to charge more than $300.00 a set and it would still require some tweaking by the users. Not going to happen.

Cut the sheet of MLV in half and hang the rough cut on the interior skin using Velcro Patches. Trim to fit. Cut small holes for clips and the lock cable, etc.

Attach as much CCF to the MLV as will fit when the door card is reinstalled. Peel the egg carton looking thing from the door card and throw it away. Remount the door card. Tap on the exterior skin to hear how much more solid it sounds. Turn up the stereo to hear how much better bass response you are now getting from the door mounted speakers. Go for a ride and listen to how much traffic noise has been attenuated :)

I'll have full instructions with pictures on my Web site as soon as I can get it written up.

As soon as we do 1 LIL NDN's floor I'll have final numbers on the rest of the car. I'm trying to figure out how to best cut the stuff up to reduce weight for shipping and minimize waste.

I will be doing this very soon if jonymac comes back from vacation, some people never do. I believe he has the parts at his house, who knows we might have to go get some stuff at NAPA, you never know.

Definately on my "to do" list.   I think I would want to do as much of the interior at once and get it done so will be interested when your ready to ship the whole shebang.

Now what excuse can I come up with for spending some more money on the Solstice, "dear its really, really important 'cause " .....

Would be nice to have this done at the MD MOD meet.

Jonymac tried at the last meet, they did not come close to finishing. It is a long slow process but I have heard Jonymacs car, it is amazing how well this works. The factory stereo sounds simply awesome now. I am sure parts of it could be done at the meet with some guidance from The Master, and help from Joe at taring stuff a part. If you are having JPM do your door panels this would be great to do while you wait for him to finish the panels.

I was thinking vendor installed . I'm sure Jonymac can do it a lot quicker after his first "experience". ;)

My point was time, you have to remove the entire interior and the entire interior of the trunk and there are under hood panels too. He could most likely guide people on doing the doors or other part of the install. I am not sure that Joe's front yard is the best place to do this large and undertaking. I will know more in a week or two as we tackle my doors. I can give an appraisal of how long it takes us in Jmacs garage. He said about 4 hours for just the doors but he is a perfectionist, that's why I call him AR.

Thanks for checking in AR, we won't tell anyone you are so AR you started packing to go to the beach last Christmas. I promise it will not take near as long to install your sway bar as mine. I bought a special tool just for the install. 19mm ratcheting box end wrench, it will make a huge difference.
