GXPsy Rose's Husband Roque - Bypass Surgery
« on: July 02, 2009, 05:59:49 AM »
I posted on the no mod meet weekend thread but I'll do it here also so everyone knows what's going on

Rogue - Jeff was cutting his grass and became weak, he went to the doc and the same results was verified via stress test.  Yesterday, he had an angiogram and they discovered his three main arteries to his hard a 90-99% blocked and they didn't let him leave.  He is going into surgery this morning for a triple bypass.   The doc said that his heart is in great shape, like a 30 yr old.  Caught just in time.

Pat and Jeff,
We are praying for a successful recovery.

The good Lord was with you as you mowed the lawn and you got to the right place to have everything checked out.  So glad that it was found now, and the Doctors can go forward with their good works.  You are in our prayers Jeff.  Take care we wish you a smooth and complete recovery!

I also will keep you guys in my prayers.  If you have any questions that you are confused with the answers please PM me.

I assume one of the vessels was the LAD.  If so this is very fortunate that it was found.  We call this the widow maker.

Very Very important for him and almost everyone to control bloodpressure, cholesterol and for most take a statin.  Over 50 without hx of ulcers, take a baby aspirin daily.

I love all you guys and would not want to lose any member of our great community.  Not even Go-N-Def!

It means that 75+% of his heart veins were blocked, which WOULD have killed him--Had the same thing 4 yrs ago April myself, he'll be fine.
BUt, my thoughts are with you; when he gets better, we can talk war stories. BTW I was in medicine for almost 30 yrs before leaving the field in 2000.

Hope all goes well, are thoughts are with both of you.

My first thought was his heart attack was induced by the M.B. Autocross Queen.
Glad to see it was just lawnmower related.

I just got off the phone with Pat (GXPsy) and she asked me to inform the forum members of Jeff's condition. He had a 3 vessel bypass operation this morning that started at 7:30 and lasted 4 hours. Surgery was a success - no complications. He is in the ICU and was talking to Pat. This is terrific news.  :yay: Now on to recovery. No driving for the first month, then up to 2 months recuperation. Then, he'll be driving that awesome black coupe !

Great news!  Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I'm a bit surprised that no one has offered, so I guess I'll step up to the plate and look after the coupe for the next three months.  No need to thank me, I'm sure it will be a small imposition. :D

Thanks everyone for the prayers & support.

I had a few minutes and thought I'd take the time to get everyone updated before I head back out to the hospital.  Thank goodness it's only 2 miles from the house.

A whole bunch of things were going on at the same time this all occurred.
Jeff was getting worked up for another surgery (which has since been postponed), so he already had an appointment scheduled with a cardiologist.  While in that appointment, he told the cardiologist what he had experience while cutting the grass, he developed a tightness in his jaw muscles that radiated down to shoulders/upper chest and trouble catching his breath that went away very quickly as soon as he stopped mowing the grass.  He thought it was related to the tooth issue (had a prior root canal) he was having where he needed to have an apicectomy (the very tip of the root of the tooth needed to be cut out & remove that nerve).  The pain originated in that jaw area.
The cardiologist did an echo stress test.  4 minutes into the test, Jeff developed the same symptoms, the 12 lead EKG developed PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) in between the regular beats with very slight ST depressions that resolved very quickly (, 30 secs) after they took him off the treadmill.  (This is NOT a good sign)  :( the Echo cardiogram show no changes in the action of the heart muscles (This was a GOOD sign),  :thumbs:this didn't show any heart muscles that were affected or the problem might be.  The cardiologist than sent Jeff for a Cardiac Cath (angiogram) & that's when the problems were identified.  Both the Cardiologist & the Cardiac Surgeon were amaze that:
1.  He didn't show the normal signs & symptoms of heart blockage
Jeff showed very atypical signs & symptoms...guess that goes with his A type personality and abnormal sense of humor
Jeff said, he just did this to keep my nursing skills up   :gaah: and that's why he married me   :D  (I can find better ways to keep my nursing skills current)
2.  He's saving grace was that his heart was as strong as a 30yr old, and compensated for the decrease blood flow and that's what kept him from having a heart attack.
3.  He was a heart attack waiting to happen and they weren't letting him out of the hospital until after they scheduled him for surgery got him fixed
Fixed.......hummmm I didn't even know he was broken
Jeff has kept his sense of humor (so far) throughout this ordeal.
I got to see him shortly after they finished the surgery, he was on a ventilator, 9 different IV medication drips, 3 chest tubes, foley catheter and sequential compression device on his legs. At about 430pm he was removed from the ventilator & I got to see him again shortly after 5pm.  He wasn't cooperating with the nurses in regard to trying to encourage him to take ice chips so that they can start giving him oral medications and take him off some of the IV medications.  I told him he needed to do what the nurses were asking him to do & than I said...Do you want me to take care of you?.  Mind you...he had been mumbling before this, but very clearly he said "Hell, no" (knowing that I'm very persistant & strong willed when it comes to patients such as he was being. )  At that time he opened his mouth and took a few ice chips from the nurse  Stayed with him until about 7p & I went back at 8p, he was sitting up, more alert & actually talking (he denies all that previously happened   )  When I left at about 930p, he was holding his teddy bear, Sir Cough-a-lot (the bears are used by the patients to hug tight across their chest for "splinting" purposes for when they cough, laugh, move to help with the pain from the incision).
Jeff will be in the CCU (Coronary Care Unit for about 3 days, before they transfer him to a step down unit.  Jeff's older brother said this was a "wake-up" call for him (who has never seen a cardiologist) & has now scheduled an appointment with a Cardiologist for a full workup.
We are taking one day at a time right now &  :cryin: I don't think we're going to be going to the MECCA final farewell  :cryin:, so all who go say goodbye for us.

Yes, I've had several offers from people who are more than willing to "Coupe sit" for us, & no ones offered to "doggy sit" ....what's up with that    :idk:

Well, I think that's more than enough saga at this time.

Thanks again for all the support & prayers.

FYI:  I'm a RN 17+ yrs, 8 years Navy Nurse Corps w/ 6 years shipboard, combat casualty, critical care, trauma, ER, cardiac, and was a volunteer paramedic x 6 yrs.
I haven't done floor nursing in over 5 years but with Jeff, I always keep my nursing skills updated

He's a very lucky man.  In many ways,  Not the least of which is to have you around to take care of him.

Hopefully, your loving and skilled care, and his strength and orneriness, will make for a speedy recovery.

Our thoughts are with both you guys.
