Critterman,

I believe this price _is_ just the two center grills, _not_ including the GXP brake ducts. I could be wrong.

Rudy, you may want to clarify your web site as to what is being sold.  The photos show the GXP vent sides also.

I ordered mine. Now I need to find a new bumper to put them in. Mine is quite road rashed, plus a pickup threw a tire tread up in front of me and I couldn't avoid it.

Rudy says specifically on his ordering page, "One Recessed Grills Set (RAW UNFINISHED)". So no, they will not be painted black.

They are as you see them in the illustration.

I assume the shop that's painting his hood will be doing it at the same time... kind of a loose definition of "I will be painting..."

Yes exactly what I PM'd him...they are painting both together.  Rudy advised me to just clean it well to get any extra silicone material off of it.

Haha yeah..that's why I thought he was doing it himself.

So i guess i'll just prep it really well with some duplicolor prep spray to remove all dirt/silicone etc.

But what about primer...sanding....clear coat...?  If someone could post the steps that would be great.
Im a noob so i dont know if they would need to be sanded or how many layers of primer etc etc.

If I'm not mistaken, I thought Rudy had said somewhere that they were ready for primer to paint?  Maybe I am wrong.  Someone correct me.

Steve,

This is what Rudy says on his site. He said SOMEWHERE that they aren't primed but are raw plastic. Can't find it at the moment. It does however say at the bottom of the page, "One Recessed Grills Set (RAW UNFINISHED)" and not "primed, ready for paint".

I have a little concern about the durability of the grills. If the tabs break off as easily as they do, will a stone strike break them?

"Keep in mind, that these parts will have imperfections (air bubble pockets and /or
broken/missing mounting tabs) concentrated mostly on the back side or non-visible side of the frames and inserts.  All of which will not affect the proper seating during installation.  The hexagon hole tunnels will have parting line or mold imperfections as this is where both halves of the mold meet. These areas can be sanded or filed smooth if you want every hexagon tunnel to be flawless.  But, this finessing will require time and patience to do this and IMO, it's really not going to be that noticeable unless you paint the inserts a bright and glossy finish other than black.

However, the front surfaces (visible side) of both the frames and the inserts will be nearly perfect without any flaws or cavities from air bubbles. Final finessing and finish work will be up to you on how far you want it to look perfect before paint application.  Lead time is 1-2 weeks typically pending work load and demand.

Also, this mod DOES require you to trim or remove the black foam bumper behind the fascia.  Removing it entirely is easier and even quicker to do than to try trimming the rubbery foam material itself."

hi Bob...

The material is actually pretty tough.  It's the tabs which seem to be the problem.  They won't snap when you install the frame into the fascia.  Just when you attempt to pull them out will a few tabs may break due to the twisting and angling while extracting the frame away from the fascia.  Rocks won't cause the grills to break unless it's a BIG rock.  At most, I can see that rocks may put dents or pits into the frames/grills.  But, that typically happens on the fascia itself.  It's also the nature of the beast being up front and so low to the ground.  Unless you have these parts fabricated out of some sort of metal, which I've contemplated about, it will be vulnerable, like the bumper itself, to road debris.  One good thing, the grills are repairable and repaintable if needed and the tabs are re-glueable if broken off.

Also, there's no silicone mold release agent used when fabricating these parts.  They come straight from the silicone molds itself.  And because of that, there may be traces of silicone residue on the surface of these parts.  Silicone will react with paint and primer.  It's best to pre-clean the parts with some sort of degreaser or paint thinner.  Just wipe with the solution in a rag a few times over the parts before primer, finish sand the primer, and apply paint and clearcoat following.  Applying more than one clear coat on the visible surfaces to add extra impact protection against road debris would be my suggestion.
Hope this helps.  rudy

Thanks Rudy for the update. I misunderstood what you had said before about the silicone. I have removed that from my post above.

Yeah, as you said, stones are the nature of the beast with our cars. That's why I did the clear bra on mine.    And thanks for aleveating any concerns that I had. These grills, having installed your spoiler over a year ago, are to good to pass up. :award:
