Questions on the Westers Tune.
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:30:29 AM »
Hi,
I have the Superchips tune, and it put a smile on my face, but after I got the SOLO RCD exhaust on my 2008 GXP it broke my tune and now the smile it gone.

I'm seriously considering getting the Westers tune (and becoming a supporting member here), but I'm confused? Can someone help?

I understand you send your ecu to Lyndon and he puts the tune on it. But how does the HP tuner thing fit in? And what happens when I go to the dealer with his tune? Can it get wiped out? What happens then? Can I get a second ecu for Wester's tune and keep my old one for the "stock" settings?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

I want to put that smile back on my face.

If you have HP Tuners ( a very good idea ) you don't have to send in your ecm, Wester emails you a file and you install it. Many people have second ecm's no problem. Yes the dealer may wipe it (why it's good to have HP Tuners) lots of people switch it back berfore going to dealer (a good idea ) then reinstall after you get it back home. While HP Tuners doubles the cost it is well worth it.

I would vote for Westers + HPT for different reasons. Even is one of the most expensive paths (HPT about 500$ on top of Wester's tune) it is the most strong because you can make logs, update your tune by yourself in a matter of minutes.

And what happens when I go to the dealer with his tune? Can it get wiped out? What happens then?
Some of the guys didn't had any problems with the dealer because of the tune but this may vary. Depending which path you go (HPT or spare ecu) you have the possibility to go with stock tune in yout ECM if you gonna visit a dealer to be safe.

Can I get a second ecu for Wester's tune and keep my old one for the "stock" settings?
Yes, many around here have a second ECU with Wester's tune on it. This is one of the cheapest solutions but requires shipping it to Lyndon for updates/upgrades.

Also I might suggest another one, to find someone with HPT in your area and pay only some credits (instead the whole HPT package) to that person and update your tune which can be sent/received to Lyndon by email.

It will help if you read more about getting Wester's tune and see which method suits you best.

Personally I had none with HPT in my country, I couldn't order HPT and I couldn't get a spare ECM (costs over $1000 in my country) but still I did everything to had my Opel GT tuned by Lyndon, you can't go wrong when is about tune with Lyndon.

Many good points. And it's clear now. Thanks.

Lili Goat.... Lyndon doesn't have a problem emailing the tune? If so, that may be the route... buy the HP tuner. But what are these "credits" everyone is talking about?

Is this what I need to buy?

Get the HPTuners suite that cost $495.  If we know of your location, perhaps there is someone close with HPtuners and you don't have to buy it.

The credits (eight) come with HPtuners and every time you write a new tune to your car, HPTuners uses 2 credits.

Or you can register your YY/Make car and write countless numbers of tunes on your car or anyone else with the same YY/make.  This costs 6 credits for your car.

OK Joe you confused me with this one and I have HP tuners. You have a choice of registering your car 2 credits, or all cars like yours for the whole year 6 credits. Either way you get unlimited uploads for your registered vehicle. If you register the whole year for say a 2007 GXP, you can do any 2007 GXP. That's what I did, if you do that you will still have 2 credits left to do another vehicle. I did my truck, just a single vehicle, then bought more credits to do my sons truck and his GTO, each is registered as a single vehicle. By the way if your other car is a GM LS-2 or above, 3, or 7 it requires 4 credits to register a single vehicle. The new G8 requires 4 credits to register a single vehicle. If you register your car as a single vehicle, and later want to register the whole year you get 75% of the credits you already used toward the upgrade to the whole year.

OK... after  Lil Goat's reply... let me get this straight:

I but a GM HP Tuner and get 8 credits. I can register MY 2008 GXP and update it 4 times (ie. 8/2 credits = 4)

If I want to upload more than 4 times, I need to buy more credits? So say I have Westers Tune and want to switch back to stock for an oil change or something (going to dealer)... that would use:

2 credits for Wester tune upload
2 credits to go back to stock for dealer visit
2 credits to go back to Westers tune upload

so I'd have only 2 credits left which means I could upload a new tune or go back to stock?

Hmmmm... GMparts has a ecm for a 2008 GXP for $304 plus shipping. Maybe I'll just buy that for westers tune and keep me orginal stock ecm for dealer visits?

My brain is hurting me! Almost wish I didn't buy the Solo exhaust that started this  :violin:

No ignore what Joe said, if you register your vehicle using 2 credits you can upload as much as you want, 100,000 times. You can only do your car, no others. Unless you register them. If you use 6 credits you can do ANY car of the same make and model as many times as you want, for 6 credits you could install a tune on every 2007 Solstice GXP ever made.

I used 2 credits to register my truck, I have changed the tune at least 10 times and never used another credit. I have 2 tunes for the truck, one 87 octane high millage, one 93 octane hi performance I switch them back and forth all the time AND USE NO ADDITIONAL CREDITS.

Hi Lili Goat, thanks for the quick response...

OK.. here's another questions. In order to cut down on the cost I'm thinking of getting my brother to chip in on the price. problem is he has a Mustang.

BTW,... he calls my Solstice a "girl's car" even though I have more HP , but you can't choose your family  :idk:

Anyway... if I get the tuner, 8 GM credits, can I use 2 credits on my car and 2 credits on his ford mustang?

Still thinking a spare ecm may be the way to go. But I want to look at all options.

Actually, Goat is partially correct.  I've tried uploading updates from Westers and it is considered a new tune and wanted 2 more credits.  Sure you can upload the same tune as many times you want but why bother.

Get HPT and register you model and year and you can have upgrades for life from Lyndon

Get and ECM and you'll play the shipping game everytime you upgrade and the tune needs updating.

Good point. If I register the year/model... is that good for only one year (I think I read on the site), or forever?

Correct, Since my wife has a 2009 and I have a 2007, I need 6 more credits to register her year/model

Oh, Goat, I clarified the so called confusing post for you.  The forum had coverted "8" to a smily

If you had that issue Joe it was due to a mistake by Lyndon, he has done it to me too, just tell him to fix the vin: in the tune and it will upload fine. I do it with my truck, my sons truck and his GTO, all three are registered with 2 credits. I have multiple tunes for all three vehicle, at least 10 for the GTO and can upload any one of them, but the tune has to be set up for the car. If you have the entire year registered like we do, I can upload my tune on your car, and have. If you have a single registration you have to reset the vin in the tune to match the car.

This is why Lyndon has us download a tune and send it to him, that way when he mods the tune and sends it back he knows it will upload. What Lyndon does with HP Tuners selling a tune by mail, is not what it was setup for. We kind of figured a way to make it work for us, we were pioneers.

You can buy the single car license for Dee's car and it will work fine as many times as you like.

OK... I'm convinced. I'm going to get the Westers Race Tune (need to become a supporting member here), and the HP Tuner. Need to sell a few things on eBay first.

I've been trying to get a hold of Eileen at Westers (she was answering a few questions for me last week), but no response lately.

Anyway, Lil Goat... once I have the HP Tuner, do I still have to send Lyndon my ECM? Or can he just email the file and I load it? I'll be backing up my stock tune just in case. But I'd like to save the trouble of pulling the ecm out and not having the car to drive.

I can help too ya know

Once you get HPTuners, perform a completed reading of your ECM, this takes about 20 minutes.  Send Lyndon your file, year/make and if it's a manual or automatic and the mods you have to your car.  He will send back an updated tune and it only takes 30 seconds to upload it.

Joe is correct, here is something he doesn't know though. Eileen is on vacation. We can answer most questions, Joe has done way more installs on Kappa's than I have, I have done more non Kappa cars. I know have 14 HP Tuners credits so I can tune all the cars in the family. I love HP Tuners, Lyndon about had to shove it down my throat way back when. I have the Pro version, not sure it has many advantages for a Kappa owner, it has quite a few if you have a GM big block, it will do live tuning while the car is running. I wish you could do this on the Kappa, Lyndon could make a new tune in about an hour. My car is at the dealer right now with a busted fuel pump, they told me it would have the stock tune in it when I get it back, I said I don't care. I will just reload it. It is going to run like crap as it has no cat, and they haven't noticed yet.

ddragon,

I've got to hand it to you! You went through that painful thread and still decided to do it. You will not be disappointed. I compare the Westers Race tune to the point when you're at the Apex of a roller coaster and as you start to roll downhill and you yell out" Holy XXXX"

It should take about a week to wipe the grin from your face though

Could you clarify "busted fuel pump?"  What happened, how did you notice the fuel pump failed, what were the symptoms, etc.  I'm trying to keep track of all 1st time failures being mentioned on the forums for future reference.  Thanks
