New face plates for gauges?
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:10:37 PM »
I have trouble seeing and reading the gauges on my GXP. Not enough contrast. Then, when I put on my polarized (prescription) sunglasses the gauge faces disappear completely. Now, the speedometer really isn't that important to me, but for the sake of social responsibility I suppose I should be able to read it. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you solve it? Can the NA gauge faces replace the GXP gauge faces? Thanks.

Jeff

http://www.blackcatcustom.com/  I've done three of these.  I have a white face with blue letters and upgraded white LEDs.

The speedo won't read right if you try that.  I think the NA speedo only goes to 140MPH.  There are aftermarket solutions, though.  Ask Joe where he got his.  They're on my "to do" list, but I haven't looked into them in awhile.

Edit:  I hate when that happens!   :gaah:

Neat! Thanks for the link. The comment re: 140 vs 160 mph is a valid one. I appreciate your pointing it out. Since Rogue is black, I'm thinking black face with red - any comments about visibility?

Blackcatcustom used mine as the prototype 2 years ago.  They are great and will work with you to make exactly what you want.  They can even use chrome where the light shines through.  Joe posted the site above.  You won't be disappointed.

Thanks, that would be helpful. The contrast is important, and I'd like to get it right the first time.
Duh...so how many want to get it wrong just so they can do it over again? I tried that once when I was a kid, and even then it didn't seem to make much sense. hehehehehe

And you say you're grabbin sushi...is that you're girlfriend? Oh, I am so funny tonight I just crack myself up!

Here is a picture as promised:

The chrome trim rings on the inside and the words "GXP" and "turbo" are iridescent (the light shines through them at night).  During the day, it looks like chrome.

That looks great.  Too bad they don't make them in metric, unless they do, but don't mention it on their website.

Did you do the swap yourself?  I wouldn't mind taking the gauges out, but I don't have the guts to start messing with the needles.

Joe, this is exactly what I want in my brazen and I want the exact colors/lighting (I think) that you have.  When I go to the website, it allows me to pick the white guage faces with neutral lighting, however, there is no option to choose the colors of the letters/numbers.  Any suggestions?  Barb and I need to get down for a weekend before the weather turns cold.  Would you be able to install this for me?  Unfortunately, we can't make to the mod meet because we will be on our cruise to Bermuda.  Let's see if we can schedule a day sometime between now and the end of October.

DickW beat me to the punch here, Joe. I was planning on asking the same question. Is this a good activity for SMMM6? I'm wondering, how would classic black numerals look on a white face with the stock factory red backlighting?

Yes, it takes about 90 minutes to do.   The factor lights are small incadescent bulbs that have a red sleeve over them.  Those can be pulled off to give off a white light or you can purchase the LED upgrade.  I have this on mine.   Here mine

To answer the Metric question...Yes.  I got my gauges from blackcat in KPH only.  In my case, there is no need for MPH 99.999% of the time, so why clutter up the gauges that are already in a tunnel that seems to attract blindingly direct sunlight.

I'd have to get em in both, cuz I travel back and forth. I'd want to see if I could design it for better visibility though.

LPT, you can pretty much get any design you want (including the KPH & MPH).  Their website is more for ordering standard gauges.  If you deal with them directly, they can come up with any color combination and style you want to make them easier to read.  I have the white faces with red numbering.  It works better in the sun, and looks great at night the few times it's been dark enough here in the summer to have the headlights on.

That's a great question.  randy or Dave from DDMWorks might be able to help you with that.
