Diffence between Westers "SS" tune and "Race" tune?
« on: August 27, 2009, 03:58:56 PM »
Well, I have to ask because I keep seeing it. But what's the "SS" tune... Westers I assume? I have the "Race" tune.... which is better? Or what are the differences.

And just thought I'd mention this... although I asked Lyndon, was wondering if anyone else it getting this. But I've been getting only 18-19 psi on my Westers "race" tune.... I'm near Lake Ontario (Toronto) so he thinks it's just weather pressure.

Anyone in this area getting the same PSI with a race tune?

I get 18- 19 bone stock with an automatic.  I would hope to do better than that.

I'm not sure what the SS tune is either?

I believe the "SS" tune is the latest version of the race tune. Not sure if a catless DP is a requirement or not.

the ss tune is the new tune using the beta. After LG had tested it and it was joked about "SS". I had emailed Lyndon for the update. The name of the file Lyndon returned was "SS" tune. So i figured i would update my signature to reflect that. I haven't seen anything stating that this new beta tune is the new race tune from Dejon yet. If/when thats the case, i will put it back to the race tune. I figure by having it in my sig, it would cause some discussion , which maybe it just has??. As LG and others have said on another thread, this new tune is a marked improvement over the standard race tune. I get 23 pounds very low in the rpm range and then solid 22 pounds and keeps it. More boost over a longer rpm range. Thats what I am seeing. Because of this, while driving up windy river gorge roads, I can drive pretty much in 3rd gear the whole time( i am slightly over the speed limit to be able to do this, if you know what i mean). There is enough torque in the lower rpm range, that i can power out of turns in 3rd and not feel bogged or the need to down shift to 2nd, just to shortly upshift back to 3rd. I think the tune is great.

Folks, there are truly are no "titled" tunes from Lyndon. Other people are generating these titles. Basically, he will deliver any sort of tune you want within the limitations of the hardware on your car. I have received NINE different tunes from Lyndon that vary with what I want the engine to do. In addition, he sent me 96 and 98 octane tunes depending on what gas I can score at the SCCA Solo Nationals. There is NO "race" or "SS" tunes. There are just TUNES. Want more? Motivated by the bragging someone was doing about all sorts of power he was getting with Wester's "latest" tune, I asked for and received exactly THAT tune. The engine had to obtain north of 150deg cooling system temps before it would accept throttle inputs. And while it warmed up, it would not hold a steady idle. (Yes, it was properly flashed.) I reverted to my 5th file and all was well. As Lyndon learns and does more with the LNF, we will see ever greater outputs, but the "giant" steps may already have been made. While others are playing with GMPP altered tunes, he has clearly told me to WAIT for the GMPP hardware as he feels there are equal gains to be made with existing stuff. Such is the nature of tuning. My guess is that over the winter some "discoveries" will be made. Hopefully, he will copy protect them this time so he isn't plagiarized.

Disclaimer:  Not to quibble.  But . . . .

There is TOO a Wester's "Race Tune."

"18 PSI Tune" and "23 PSI Race Tune."

that wasn't the discussion i was intending to start. :gaah: i understand the fact a tune is a tune to tuners...but to people that are not hp tuner pros, or work with the ecm regularly, we novice enthusiasts have progressed from wastegate mods, xhaust, intercoolers, to BSR, to Westers, to now Westers latest tune with the beta. to me it is the tune that is named "SS" as it isn't the same as the race tune currently out there. I have removed the "SS" so as not to delinite an update vs a new named tune. As my car is only a sunny day occasional driver, i always let it warm up until the oil is 120 degrees and don't drive it hard until the oil reaches 150, so i haven't seen the cold performance issue you had. I fully admit that i indeed bragged about the tune, even if you aren't refering to me i still will take ownership of that..my "SS" tune was tweaked as i have a stock cat though....was i overzelously? maybe...but thats how my but felt.  i will stand by what i said about my experience. i maybe should have just agreed that the tune was stupid fast and left it at that, but man my car is so much more fun to drive... I still think the tune is unreal.

Ok, so what we should say then is that the "SS tune" is a nickname for a certain revision of Wester's race tune.

looking at dejons and westers websites, the hp gains of dejon is up to 75hp and westers is 90. I never noticed/looked before. maybe the update is now the race tune at westers and will become the race tune on dejons site????  :idk:

The SS tune is in fact a tune catagory and Lyndon will know what you are talking about when you refer to it, it is and improved Race tune, which Lyndon named sometime ago and as Ben says it on his website. He and I talked about the change in the tune after the release of the HP Tuners beta, there is a big difference on my car and on most people who have tried it's cars. The major difference being boost comes on much sooner and it holds boost better. It is indeed a modified tune, just a different name so you can tell the difference, it was only named to identify what category tune you have, it could have just as easily been called August 2009. If you received your tune prior to August you have a Race tune, if you asked for a update after early August you most likely got the SS, it is no big deal just a name for the update created after the HPT beta release. If we keep calling them all Race it gets confusing, which is why the last major update was refereed to as 5.2, I think Joe named that one so people could know what to ask Lyndon for. Street, Race, and SS all refer to the tunes in general just to categorize them. Everyone's tune is different but will fall in to most likely 1 of 2 categories, Race or SS although I would imagine there may still be some Street tunes out there (very early tune, was initially cheaper than the Race). I think I have 30 different Race tunes, I asked for a different name. I asked Lyndon if SS was OK and he said yes, just easier to say than " the tune you made for lil goat's car in early August after the HP Tuners beta release" Bob is correct it is not a specific tune, but just a general category, as each is different. Lyndon sent out the SS tune for Ben's car, it will be nothing like mine as he has a CAT. Spikey has the new tune and it is unlike mine as well he has an auto, but they are all SS tunes as the have the update.

I have no idea what Lyndon is doing with Dejon, if you bought from Dejon or Saturn Motorsports (yes they sold his tune too) you can get direct updates from Lyndon.

Just so everyone can have something to look forward to....Next week (I do not know the exact day yet.) I will be installing the SS tune in my 07 GXP 5-speed, Solo RCD, Solo HFC, K&N filter, Dejon intercooler, Dejon piped car! I will be doing a before and after dyno and will post the results soon after. Stay tuned!

The before and after is really very hard to do, Lyndon recommends 500 miles on a tune before a dyno run. Go-N Def and I tried this sometime ago, results were less than good.

I see...well then, I guess I will put 500 on the clock before I commit to a dyno. Thanks!

The only way to do it is expensive (cost of 2 runs), get a before done, then update get the miles and get and after done. There was a dyno shop here that worked with me on this I paid for both runs in advance and they gave me a discount, unfortunately they went out of business. Maybe if you talk with the shop about what you want to do they will work with you.

Lyndon sent out the SS tune for Ben's car, it will be nothing like mine as he has a CAT.

I have an update?  That was fast.  DBG and I only fitted the Hi-Flo cat and Mach Shorty exahust last week!   Awesome!  Maybe this will get that little dip in the curves out.  Lyndon Wester, you are one magnificent basterd!

Too bad Ben will never get it installed, its pretty unlikely you or Joe will ever see the invisible man.  :poke:

The ground shakes, your ears split, and you see a blue streak.  You know it's there, oh and your eyes water.  :)  and inside it is even better.

So he would have to be driving the Daytona in order for LG or DBG to see him, but he needs the Wester's tune on the GXP, quite the conundrum don't you think? :goat:

No conundrum at all.  They are both fast and blue. One or the other of LG and DBG have seen me in both.   See or unseen, I could not live without my LW tune on the GXP.  It woke the car up from its factory-induced torpor.

The FFR coupe -- a loving tribute to a 1965 era pushrod V8 barely-streetable purpose built racecar -- is bound to put more pound to the ground than any Sol roaster, short of a prepped Mallett.  But the coupe's chassis and suspension components reflect zero compromise also, so in the right hands it would go head's up in any handling contest with any Mallett Sol ever built, too.  If you want to square off vs. the FFR Coupe autoxing, best bring a madly-modified FWD or AWD, or another Cobra.  On the track . . .  best bring an Aeriel Atom.

So in answer to your question, yes, its fast.  And getting faster. . . .

The GXP is stealthier, though.
