What type of Dyno do the car manufacturers use for their posted specs?

They use a different kind of dyno since they only want crank HP.

Any reason no matter what website forum this problem always comes up?
Do people really care what there car makes and which dyno for numbers is the most accurate?  For me I could give a rats ass what my car makes and the reason is I can have a car that makes 1000Hp and tons of Torque but if I don't know how to drive it a person in a stock Civic could beat me.  In addition unless the Dyno can take into consideration every little environmental real time issue the numbers it spits out are really pointless PERIOD.
The only thing any dyno should be used for is  to get a picture of the change in power curve for each and every given mod or tune adjustment and even then there's error since there an error margin on most Dyno's.  Even the reaction time of the operator can play some role in the numbers that it spits out and some of the reason two back to back runs can look very different.
I guess the way I look at it be happy and Enjoy your ride and how it feels and handles and if you don't like something change it since it is your ride.  You could change it to something more your liking or theme but don't go chasing your tail like a DOG, enjoy what you got people and quit chasing numbers that really don't matter.

All I know is, I was blown away with my tune from GMR and it was everything that was advertised.  I know I made the comment that "Miss Red Eagle" had become a rocket ship!  The next time Bob and I get together, we are going to switch vehicles as I have always wanted to drive a Kappa tuned by Lyndon Wester.  I will still be just as happy with what I have because it is all I can handle.

I don't think they are pointless.  It's still a good gauge of what you have.

I guess Ive just learned from my other vehicle is the numbers really doesn't matter it's the graphical power curve That matters and how the car feels per your driving style PERIOD nothing more nothing less.  The more and more I learn about Lyndon the more I like the guy because he knows how to use his Dyno correctly to tune and adjust the tune accordingly to look and change the power curve to give a person power good fuel mileage and an all around great driving experience.  Numbers prove NOTHING and I would bet that no matter if one of Lyndons tunes has lower numbers than other tunes on a same dyno Lyndons once dialed in would quicker and better to drive than anybuddy out there per the whole driving experience.  I guess it's just the Male dominance thing that takes over to compare this or that is better with more power and so I'm competing with my neighbor to see who wins or where I stack up to the big dogs.  Life is too short to chase things like that and I grateful I know that at a relatively young age.
For those looking for a race car BUY A RACE CAR or drop in a V8 like Mallet does.  If you don't have the $$ to do that then go with a turbo upgrade & tune but don't nickle and dime your self to death for every ounce of power.  On most High output consumer vehicles the first 100 or a little below power increase is just under 1k after that the cost to get anything else wrung out of the stock motor will start costing you highly and if you want more just save till you can get that NEW V8 motor or turbo upgrade.  I just can't stress that enough since I work hard as well as we all do for the $$ we make and is stupid and pointless to just be tossing it down the drain.

Yes, but the majority of people gravitate to higher posted numbers, without the understanding of what a Dyno machine is really for.
Our cars were never design for 1/4 mile jaunts, but rather as an excellent handling roadster.
However must of the obsession is with the power output to the wheels and less how to make it even better in how it handles.
This is a roadster and not a muscle car, I want to improve lateral g's, cornering ability etc.
I am more interested in road racing capabilities than going down the 1/4 track in x seconds.

No different.  I was just trying to post a picture to make my point, but now I remember you're a "1,000 words" kind of guy ;)  I can't argue the electric razor look.  All I'm saying is that electric razors are uniquely styled - unlike disposable razors whose styling is unimaginative.  Every disposable razor looks like every other disposable razor on the road.

Oops, I mean on the shelf.  :chill:

Strange as it may seem, though, I'm hooked on my Mach III "turbo."  Which is a sort of hybrid.  It's a manual/disposable razor with a little motor in it.

I've never had my Sol confused with an S2000.  Porsche or old Jaguar, sure, but never a Honda.  :award:

Now, I guess I could contribute something to the REAL topic of this thread instead of hijacking it every post.

Good thought !

"Dyno racing" is a "sport" of its own. The ONLY thing that matters is peak numbers. With the skills and a laptop, a person can pull big numbers with what is a nearly undriveable car. Over time I have asked L.W. to massage the power delivery to be smoother. He was successful. I held the to graphs together and held them up to a strong light. There is more horsepower being delivered down low than is being lost at the peak and the blip at 3000rpm is less pronounced. However, there is consistent 3 deg of KR from 3-4000rpm which must be pulling boost. If L.W. gets THAT tuned out there should be a nice gain in torque. We'll see.

Not a hijack just a slight detour.

With all this talk about razors I got to thinking.  If Victor Kiam was still alive and if he drove a Sol do you think he would have liked it enough to have bought Pontiac?

Now back to the topic.

I have to say, I agree with a lot of what tazz is saying.  The dyno numbers are great to see what your mods are doing power-wise, but you also need the correct tuning to get the most out of them.  I went on a long run this weekend with my car club, and there was hardly enough straight open road to really floor it and see what it does over 90mph.  The twisties are why, hopefully, we all bought this car...as it is a roadster and not a dragster LOL.  Lyndon has been updating these tunes consistently and each time, the car has become increasingly smooth, the low end has gotten better, and the car is flat-out fun to drive.  There is not really much "driving" in a straight line, besides the ability to shift quickly and know how to match the RPM's with power delivery.  To me, the things associated to driving the twisties are more fun...the cornering, the braking, the accelerating, and the ability to test the cars limits of lateral g's.  While I do not think dyno curves are a waste, I do think most people who are not car-savvy have been known to use them as bragging tools.  I have an auto, so it is hard to even dyno mine...but I don't really care because I can feel the difference in the tunes, which was especially evident on the run this weekend.  Cornering was a blast!!  I had a little fun on the highway when a few of us were driving home, and let me just say that anything lost up high in the powerband was unnoticed, probably because I was holding on tight from the power that was there.  The pull from 80mph+ is more than I would have ever expected from a 4 cylinder motor, turbo or not.  Kudos to anyone that can tune properly and to all...happy and safe driving! Snaponbob and Ron, nice numbers and I hope that they apply well to your racing/autocrossing endeavors.
