Can you double clutch into 4th?
didn't try that ... will try when I get home from work tomorrow ... but really that is a workaround ... I shouldn't have to do that .... something must be causing this to happen since I have had no problems before .... but it has been about 1,500 miles since I put in the new clutch ...

Can you double clutch into 4th?
I took her out for a spin this evening  ... and yes ... I can double clutch into 4th ... no problem ... all other gears are fine and easily go into place with no trouble ... it's just the 5th to 4th where the problem occurs.

sorry if it came off that I didn't appreciate the advice  ... because I do ... ALL help is gratefully appreciated

That is what I was thinking and trying to find out.  That would be my first guess, next would be a shifting arm

I know sometimes I pull back to down shift to 4th and feels like I hit a flat spot just now and than.I think its hitting between somewhere cause if I move the stick to the right it goes rite in . Like I'm trying to go into 2nd and it won't let me . I always double shift through all gears 2nd,3rd,4th and  5th seems like it goes into gear smoother.

What is double shifting?
step on the clutch once to shift from one gear to neutral, let it off and thenstep on it again to shift from neutral to the gear you chose. this must be done when tha car/truck doesn t have a syncro, that s why people here believe it might be a problem of the syncro. when i was at the navy, i was a truck and bus driver, and all of the vehicles needed double clutch. until u get used to it, it feels kind of funny as a procedure..

I just received this from a gentleman at Royal Purple:

From: David Canitz <DCanitz@royalpurple.com>

Date: Wed, 7 Oct 2009 08:08:34 -0500
Subject: RE: 2006 Pontiac Solstice manual transmission fluid

Mike,

The manual transmission in your Solstice actually recommends an API GL3 75W90.
This is actually equivalent to a 10W40 Motor Oil - not a common EP gear oil used in differentials.

We recommend using the RP 10W40 Motor Oil part # 01140 or the RP XPR 10W40 part # 01041.

I'm not sure that you are going to solve your single gear shifting problems as this sounds more like a nicked synchronizer not allowing the proper spin up of the 4th gear hub for a synchronized shift.

You've stated that the transmission easily shifts into all gears with the engine running and the clutch depressed while stopped at a traffic light.
This verifies that the linkage is working properly and that the clutch is being properly released to stop the rotation of the input shaft on the transmission.

Being able to shift 5 to 3 also verifies that the clutch is working properly.

However, not being able to shift from 5 to 4 and I'm assuming a slightly harder shift from 3-4 - I'm thinking the problem is in the actual 4th gear synchronizer.

It may not require anything more than improving the surface contact / mating of the 4th gear synchronizer to 4th gear hub face so that the shifting improves.
The might require disassembly of the transmission to perform this if the RP 10W40 Motor Oil does not improve this.

Going to a slightly lighter viscosity oil might also allow this to improve - such as the RP XPR 5W30 Motor Oil part # 01021.  Takes 2.75 quarts for your transmission.

Thanks for the email and for considering RP for your manual transmission.

ok ... I changed the oil and added the zMAX .... the old oil was very clean ... drained it over some filter paper ... no shavings ... don't notice any difference but I will drive it for a couple of days and see if it improves .... if it doesn't :( ... I'll have to have it torn down and see what we find.

I hope that helps.  But, I'm betting that it's a bad synchronizer.
