Motorized License Plate- Modified for Lowered GXP
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:22:34 PM »
Dave from DDMWorks had his work cut out for him when I ran this idea by him.  My GXP is lowered, so a license plate bracket under the front bumper would not work.  I ended up purchasing the Davies Corvette motorized license plate frame, and asked Dave to install it in the lower slit on the GXP bumper.  It took three hours for him to install with some modification, but it is one of the coolest modifications to date.  Also, this is a great idea for someone who has the recessed grills, which no longer allow for use of the OEM plate frame.

Thanks for uploading the video Steve but would you happen to have one with better light? You can't see much other than the plate itself.  :idk:

According to Dave it took 4 hours of blood sweat and tears, but it is REALLY cool. Dave removed the entire front bumper and spent a lot of time with a Roto Zip and trim tool. The grill is pretty easy to remove, 2 screws and some clips and it pops right off. I replaced mine, nothing to it.

I believe the grill is held in with clips and tabs...the center section where the plate is was just trimmed out.

Also, I took some more video in the light...front and side views...I will post them later today.

Technically something motorized like this isn't legal here, but as long as you're careful you're not likely to get busted for it.

You can't tell from the outside that it is motorized...the whole thing is hidden inside the slit in the GXP grill...that's the best part!!!

I would love one of these.  Unfortunately, unlike earlier production, the 2009 front brackets are riveted to the nose of the car, so one would need to fill and paint the holes.....

Your dealer must have attached it to comply with State regulations.  :idk:

I don't have anything on my 2009 Coupe because I live in a one (1) plate State.

I watched it come off the transporter and don't remember seeing anything like it in the car.  All I found was the cargo net.

That was probably your dealer.  My 2008 MY came with the front plate bracket in the trunk, in a sealed bag with 2 pop-rivets, 4 tag plate screws (but NO double-sided tape).  Fortunately I caught it in time and told the dealer NOT TO MOUNT that d*mned thing on pain of cancelling the deal :)

Yes, apparently they switched to rivets in later production and of course my dealer was Johnny on the spot with dealer prep - they had the front plates on before they hit the showroom floor.  Damn it!

I am told the late ones  all came that way - if one dealer decided not to use the rivets, you lucked out!

Mine was early 07 (January 07, to be exact) and my plate was not attached to the car on the dealers lot.  They handed me the plate frame when I drove away the car.

Yeah - illegal to do that here where front plates are mandatory.  It has to leave the lot properkly outfitted for legal street use, which is probably why it is the first thing they do when they unload the new cars.
