I got jacked!
« on: December 11, 2009, 08:18:23 AM »
Last night I picked up a new floor jack at Costco, not sure all Costco's have them but this is a sweeeeete deal. The jack is normally $179.90 other places then add $69 shipping so roughly $250 Costco has them for $94.95, I got 2, one for me and one for our fearless leader.

Same jack on Amazon $149 and $82 shipping this sucker is heavy.

Feature list on this 3.5 Ton Steel Jack:

    *
3.5 inch saddle height for low-clearance applications
    *
Maximum lift height of 21 3/8 in.
    *
      Two Stage Quick lift pump.
    *
Reinforced side rails for safety and durability.
    *
      2 piece padded Handle
    *
Overall Dimensions approx 29in Long x 13in Wide.

1 Year Manufacturer Warranty.   Shipping Weight 105 lbs.

I haven't unboxed it yest but Joe and I will update this after we try it out, my current big floor jack is an Arcan and it has never missed a beat in 10 years, it just won't fit under the Solstice, the new one will.

My concern is that I've purchased jacks similar to these, under the brand Black Jack, also from CostCo, and also because it was an ridiculous deal.  But they are that cheap for a reason.  I hope you don't have the same problems, but my jack from CostCo always had issues.  Primarily, the release/lowering function.  It always seemed to hang, and then drop very drastically while lowering.

If it didn't have that one problem, I would have considered the other issues like cheaper built valves/pumps, etc worth it.  But due to how dangerous the lowering function is, I never actually use it to raise the car anymore.

I bought a Torin jack from Costco it was a pain and I returned it, my other jack from Costco is an Arcan like this one and 10 years with no issue's and it has been used a lot, to jack up both my GMC truck and the Solstice just doesn't fit under the Solstice. This is not a cheap jack or light at 105 lbs, I have never bought any brand of aluminum jack that was worth a crap! That includes the $300 Sears I gave as a gift. Why is it cheap, well that's Costco, and being you don't have to pay up to $80 shipping that makes a big difference. If there is ever a problem just take it back for a refund, easy.

That does not sound good, I have 3 now, a small light weight aluminum one that is good if you are just changing a tire but won't go high enough to get my big butt under the car. Then the two big ones, either one you will need help both are over 100 lbs, solid steel.

As a thread FYI, a 3.5 inch height isn't a very low profile jack IMHO. Lowered Sol's will need less.

Mine's lowered about 2" and it fits under my car easily, the 3 1/2" I have now even fit under it when it was lower, at least from the side but not from the front. the aluminum ones from Pep Boys are JUNK, been there done that. 3 for 3 they all leaked day one if they worked at all, one had no fluid in it at all had already leaked out, I filled it, as soon as it started to lift all the fluid leaked out all over my driveway. Harbor Freight has a steel one that is only 2.7/8"" but it is a 2 ton, and a single piston. The one from Costco is dual piston and 3 1/2 ton. it will lift my truck and the Solstice, my goal was to have one jack in the garage, that way I will only have one to kick when I take out the trash instead of one to trip on and one to kick.

Dr helped me load it into Dee's coupe this weekend.  It barely fit and was heavy.  Dark Tech helped me get it out Sunday.  I haven't tried it out yet.  Looks great and like the ones the professionals use.  There are two pistons.

Thanks for the lights and Disco CD

I guess it will fit if you just stick a jack under the car and don't care about how you do it. If you use any (metal or plastic) lift pad I've seen designed for the car (that's what the hole is for) then no, it won't fit. Having just spent some time readjusting the KW V3 suspension this fall, I can confirm that even the rear of my car needed 2X4's under the rear tires to get a 3.3" jack under the rear jack points using lift pads.

I guess I don't care, never used a jacking puck, never had an issue. I never saw one used on any of the quite literally hundreds of cars lifted at mod meets either. In the back I just slide the jack under the pumpkin the way Dr. Love taught me to. Both tires come up together. The jacking puck is an absolute necessity if you are using a lift so as not to bend the fenders (ask Joe they bent his twice) if you are careful with a floor jack not so much.

I am hoping with the new jack and the longer reach, I can get under the front to the cross member and lift the entire front at one time.
