Security Relearn procedure HELP!
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:06:29 PM »
Need some help please.  I am following the directions from another thread from DBG and U4EA as follows:
Quote
I believe that DeepBlueGXP first posted the procedure for swapping ECMs.
1. Recommended to disconnect the battery or remove fuses 42/43 first to power down ECM.
2. Swap out ECMs.
3. Reconnect battery or replace fuses.
4. Turn on ignition to attempt to start car, car will not start, leave ignition on until yellow security lock light turns off, about 10 minutes.
5. Turn off ignition.
6. Turn on ignition to attempt to start car, car will not start, leave ignition on until yellow security lock light turns off, about 10 minutes.
7. Turn off ignition.
8. Turn on ignition to attempt to start car, car will not start, leave ignition on until yellow security lock light turns off, about 10 minutes.
9. Turn off ignition.
10. Turn on ignition and attempt to start car, if successful the car should now start.

Once the car and spare ECMs have been matched, each time you swap ECMs you will do 1 key cycle to attempt to start car and it will not start, turn off ignition and then turn on ignition and start the car. No more delay, just 1 failed attempt and immediate retry and start.

my problem is that the security lock never blinks.  Car won't start.  Security lock shows locked when start up display of idiot light illuminates, but does not blink.  Am I doing something wrong?

OTHER POSSIBILITY:  I do not know if this ECM came from an Auto or a manual.  I have an auto.  Could it be simply a problem of this being from a manual?  It very well could be, but I wanted to eliminate "Gentleman Jack Error" from the list (and for the record, tonight it is a nice glass of Lismore single malt, maybe that is the problem?).  If it is simply that is is from a manual tranny car, is there a way I can tell if the ECM is good?  It can be reprogrammed easy enough.  I assume it is good, when I turn the key, it tells me to change oil soon.

Thanks all!

GJ

"Gentleman Jack Error"

Hey I know all about GJ error, maybe you should try again tomorrow morning after a couple of cups of coffee?

I don't see anywhere in the procedure that it's supposed to blink.  Do you mean that it doesn't go off ~10 minutes or so after you attempt to start the car?

sorry, it doesnt' stay on at all.  When all the other idiot lights go off (5-10 seconds) the security light goes off as well.  The seat belt light, check engine light and one other (red, forget what it is) stay on.  The seat belt light blinks for about 3 or 4 minutes.  Does that explain it better?  Thanks for the help!

In order to initiate the relearn process:

1. Insert a master key (black head) into the ignition switch.
2. Turn to the "On" position without starting the engine. The security light should illuminate and stay on.
3. Wait approximately 10 minutes or until the security light turns off.
4. Turn off the ignition switch and wait 5 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 two more times with the same key.
6. Turn the ignition off. The vehicle will now learn the key transponder information on the next start cycle.
7. Start the vehicle. If vehicle starts and runs normally, and security light is off, the relearn is complete.

Ceeker,

Is one of the original keys different from the other?  I have two original keys.  They both look exactly the same, black plastic with Pontiac logo.  Could it be that one of these is the master and the other not?
Thanks,
GJ

It is possible that the problem is because you are trying to start the car rather than turn it to the ON position as stated by Ceeker.

You use one of the original keys that came with the car.

Yes the ones with black plastic on the end.

You need to turn the key to on, not trying to start.
The security key will light up.

I did this procedure when I bought a new ECM and had the Westers tune installed.

Hmmm...  seems like the procedures have conflicting info as to whether you turn the key to "ON" or "start".  Did you try it ceeker's way, GJ?

When I did mine I did not try to start the eng.
Just did the procedure that Ceeker has outline and has been posted before by others in this forum.
It worked perfectly.

So GJ, What was the final outcome here?  Was it GJ Operator Error, or was it your new ECM?  Inquiring minds want, no, need to know!

The good new is that it was neither GJ error nor EMC error.  Simply that the ECM was for a manual tranny.  I recieved word via homing pigeon that Lyndon is back from Sunny MX and my ECM should ship back to me MONDAY!  I can hardly wait! :yay:

Right on, and thanks for updating us.  Now the bad news for you is that I was able to reach out to some people in BC, and they were more than willing to send you some rain...so while you will get your Westers Tune very soon, you just won't be able to drive it due to the constant downpours!!   Kidding, you will love the tune and fingers crossed for the relearn procedure on this ECM.
