Seat belt Clasp stop
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:45:15 PM »
One thing our seat Belts don't have are Button Stops for the clasp. All thats there is a stitching accross the belt. What I would like is a Button stop maybe two per side. but covered in the same color as the accent stitching of the Interior.---- RED, YELLOW , GRAY,white ,Tan and just plain Black. I for One get tired of reaching down to grab the Clasp or buckle .I want (4) in Red .What do you think.    :gaah:      :banghead:    Or am I alone Just       :bdh:

I have a CG lock and never have to hunt for the belt, hell it barely retracts the CG lock is so heavy so never really thought about it. I am sure they are out there in poka dot and rainbow if you look hard enough.

Actually I'd never thought about a solution to this issue (despite it annoying me all the time).  Thanks to LilPlumber for the idea, and to the OlGoat for a cheap solution.

OK, got my seat belt clips/stops/buttons installed yesterday.  Again, thanks to Lil'Indian for the idea... the slipping clasp had been an occasional annoyance that I hadn't thought of fixing until Bobby pointed it out.

Anyway, this mod is simple enough that it really doesn't need a how-to, but I took some pictures anyway in case anyone's interested...

This is the package you get from the place Goat suggested (cost me $7 incl ship)... it's a regular "Help!" brand set, so may well be available in your local auto-parts store:

The 'male' side of the buttons has a pointy mast that you can just poke through the belt webbing, but I used a heated awl to melt a small hole as I thought it might be a better rip-stop.  Positioned it just below the cross-stitching - sorry the photo's blurry:

This is the male side pushed through:

Put the female side over the mast and use some adjustable throat pliers to get square pressure to clip them together (with cardboard as a scratch protector):

Note that the pointy tip of the mast sticks out a bit beyond the button when clipped together:

For a better, more secure, fix (and to flatten that pointy tip) I used a center punch heated in my trusty propane torch to melt/smush the tip of the mast. Alternatively you could use a small bolt held in some pliers and heated, if you don't have a punch:

Final product (rinse and repeat for the other side):

Works well and looks factory.  Recommended!

With my JPM loops, my belt never goes back into place :( It's usually hanging out of the car when I close the door, so I never have a hard time finding it

I took mine to the dealership and had both seatbelt re-tractors replaced. The seat belts still did not retract . I took it back in and when I picked it up this time, they had removed the JPM loops and left me a nice note that the belts work fine without the loops attached. I have just gotten used to flipping the belts a bit when i want them to retract. I would rather flip them a bit than go fishing for them every time.

I looked at the re-tractor assembly and they are not designed to work unless the belt comes into them from a very low angle. I have not taken the time to see if the opening in the waterfall assembly could be "Modified" to fix this.
