Dyno run failure/LNF Race engine
« on: March 21, 2010, 03:43:24 PM »
Well I knew something was slowing me down. Yesterday I took the car down for a dyno run and hp tune. After connecting to the hp tuner the knock sensor was going crazy and detuning the engine none stop. The solid lifters are extremely noisy and is the probable source of this problem. The knock sensors read not only engine knock but other abnormal engine noises. Will most likely replace the solid lifters with the stock hydraulic lifters. There goes money up in smoke $43 each x 16 plus labor. So anyway the dyno run and tune were aborted. I'm surprised the car ran as strong as it did with all the detuning going on.

I saw some posts on the HP Tuners forum about false knock.

Not sure if this would apply to you at all. But there are some smart guys in that thread.

Why not try to talk to Vince at Trifecta and see if he can fool the ECM.
Remember Vince can do more that HPT. Just a suggestion before you go and take out the solid lifters.
It is just a phone call for you to talk to him.

I might give trifecta a call . Do you know his phone number. I doubt that it is a false positive on the knock sensor since I saw it with my own eyes the timing being retarded. However I did have Gm check the knock sensor and they said it was not detuning the engine. Since my tune is a high performance tune already, I am not sure that the knock sensor was't pulling that tune down to a more stock version. Unfortunately ,I think the only way to find out is to pull the solid lifters out and try again with hydraulic lifters. I am not throwing out my solid lifters . Thanks

Disconnect the knock sensor and see what happens. Of course, if the engine was responded to the NEED for knock retard, that could cost a bunch of money!!

Spoke to Vince at Trifecta, he returned my call and seems to be a Great source for tunes .  However, he has not dealt with any problems with knock sensor problems/solid lifters. Started to replace solid lifters with the stock hydraulic lifters only to find out the billet rocker arms would not work because of clearance issues. I am not going to remove $2,100 worth of parts because of a knock sensor. If all fails the knock sensor may be history.

It is understandable to feel the way you do. You are so deep into this that you MUST know that the knock sensor is the engine's protection from destructive detention. If you DO disable the knock sensor you will need to program the computer to have less ignition advance and use dyno time to sort of sneak up on the knock threshold. The choice is having pissed away $2100 or blowing up $17K !!!!!!!!!!!

The last line that SOB wrote hear sums up my opinion very well also.

Well the engine is back together with solid lifters and billet rocker arms. It didn't make sense to me that noisy lifters would set off the knock sensors and I know now for sure that it didn't.  After many sleepness nights I decided to make a short run with the knock sensors disconnected. Guess what, the engine ran fine but was dramatically detuned automatically with no input from the knock sensor[Major power loss]. So I reconnected the 2 sensors and again the car ran great in 1st and 2nd gears but started lacking power about 5000rpm in 3rd gear. I have had trouble with the Hahn blow off valve sticking so I put the stock blow off valve on the engine. Wow, what a huge difference.  25lbs of boost in all gears, popped of the turbo exit tube 1st run with a loud pop! Car is running strong with BSR tune but can I get more with HP tune and dyno ? I believe my engine was being detuned because the traction control was still on with rear wheels spinning and front wheels stopped while on the Dyno. Can't wait to get the car on a road racing course !
