Has Anyone Added a Glove Box Lamp?
« on: April 18, 2010, 07:48:05 PM »
I see lots of nice improvement work going on here!  I'm wondering of anyone found the solution for the dark glovebox? It looks like wiring, switch and lamp/LED are needed.
Thanks,

I'm in the process of working on that one and the one in the center storage area. I hope to have both done before nationals.... They will both hopefully be operated by a push button switch behind both the glove compartment door and the center storage door.

just need  a spring switch.  find one in an old glove box and tap in to the wiring.  Easy placement for glove box.  Harder for center cubbie.

Actually for the glove box and waterfall storage area it's the opposite IMHO.
I had the interior all out of the car while I did my heated seats and decided to add some lighting. I found that the waterfall storage was easy...with the rear panels out it was simple to make a little bracket that held a snap-action switch with lever actuator, mounted behind the waterfall area. The switch lever fits perfectly into the slot just above the latch opening in the center of the storage compartment. Then I just used 4 small LEDs wired into a permenantly live circuit, Voila..... Open the door and the LEDs come on. While I was there I also added a couple of 1/2 watt leds into each side panel behind the seats to give a little light back there when the doors are open seeing as it's a common storage spot for us. For that I used the circuit for the mirror map lights. I also added an array of red LEDs in the footwells on the same circuit.

Then came the hunt for a good way to add light to the glovebox, and hunt I did, but darned if I could figure out a decent way to mount a switch for it. There is no place to add a switch in the face opening for the Glovebox, it's all metal support framing in back of that area.
So plan "B" was to add another switch beside the switches I had just added for the heated seats. (Panel under the radio in a Sky) I tossed in a SPDT switch (on-off-on) and set it up as follows. Up turns on LEDs mounted into the top edge of the glovebox tray, Down turns on an additional array of white LEDs in the passenger footwell so she can find the crap that fell out of her purse, and center is all OFF.

How to post pictures? As you are not a supporting member of the site, you have to link to a picture either externally through Photobucket or a similar site or to a picture like this one that you uploaded to the gallery.

Had the picture been a little smaller it would display all on the screen without the scroll bars.

If you were a supporting member you could upload the picture directly to the server through the editing window.

GJ failed to mention the complimentary alcohol that you have to send all the existing LSMs, but it is in the rules.  Don't believe me just ask him, he wrote them.

I'm gonna mail it tomorrow , but I'm really concerned that those pesky drunks that work at the post office might get to it first.  Lemme know if the bottles arrive empty and I'll try again.
It's gotta be like running drugs, something has to get thru.

Just keep trying until KWhale tells you to stop.  I am sure something will make it past the Arctic circle police and get to his house.

Oh I see what is going on. Carrying a 7+1 tool around all the time means one evening there is one rolling around in the box after a no carry stop? More light means finding the one is quick and easy?

Seeing this thread, I was thinking about the switch problem.  Anyone considered either a tilt switch, or a magnetic reed switch?  Both have been used for hood lights - search the forum - and would seem good choices for the glove box (at least) too.  The tilt switch would be easiest to mount I think, but would need wires run to the (moving) glove box door.  The magnetic switch could have just the magnet on the door and the switch inside the console.

Hmmm... I think I'll do this myself!
