1147 whp Saturn Sky
« on: April 28, 2010, 09:13:46 PM »
Walls Rod and Custom located southeast of Winnipeg Manitoba has been tuning this Sky for a couple of years and his latest numbers were 1147 whp  946 ft-lbs torque @ 13.5 lbs of boost. It is an LS2 with Twin Turbos (rear-mounted). The web site is www.wallsrodcustom.com. My son gets his car tuned at Walls and has seen this car in action. Says it would be like straddling a rocket and holding on for dear life.

I see they are running meets in Gimli.. Our old drag bike club used to rent the track in the early 80's..last time we rented the track it was 1000 bucks a day.. I'm guessing the rents gone up some in 25 years..

All that power would be great IF you could get it to hook up....

The 1400hp FWD Cobalt does 7-8s runs, why this wouldn't do 9s runs?

:agree: with Def.  To me, this is a "what's the point?" build.

Personally, tuning for maximum wheel horsepower for its own sake is not a worthwhile goal.  What's the point if the platform in which you stuff such a drivetrain cannot put the power to the ground or use it effectively?  Short wheelbase 3900 lb roadster with +1000 rwhp?  Theoretically, this could be a great straightline dragger, but as Def suggests, can it hook up?

I went to the website and looked at the pix.  Looks like bone stock Sky shocks and springs, and stock wheels with factory rubber. No tubbed wheelwells.  No massive drag tires.  No torque arm mods.  No Backbone. No Pro-Beam or equivalent.  No way that setup could use +1000 hp effectively for anything except maybe saying, "hey, look at me; mine's bigger."

I admire builds that are functional, with the drivetrain working in harmony with other components to operate at the utmost when performing that function.

Not my cup of tea, but to each his own.

Wha? Somebody dumped all that money into the car but failed to do simple things to make it perform? Why do some people even have cars?

Precisely.  Well, that and being an excellent tire shredder, turning money into foul smelling smoke, for those that value that sort of thing (surprisngly, some people seem to).

Hi there!

At 1147HP, hooking up would become the fast path to grenading the rear end.

Easy enough to get a new one that can handle that power. 1k hp+ engines are pretty common.

But yeah, that's further proof that these guys shouldn't be modding cars...

It uses a Viper rear end and is not a drag car. It was entered into hp competitions in the U.S.

This tuning shop. Not saying the rest of their work is bad, but a showcase car like that shouldn't be done half-assed. They could have spent a little less and had a faster, better car for it.

Considering they have an 8 month waiting list and in working with GM Canada have done the first Turbo 2010 Camaro and the first Twin Turbo G8, I am quite sure that they are not too worried what URANIUM-238 thinks of them.

Yeah, John Hennessey could probably claim the same thing...

Again, I'm not saying that their other projects have any problems, just saying that 1147 hp in a Sky without all the supporting mods needed to put that power to the ground is showboating, and doing the job halfway.

peak horsepower is for bragging rights. besides, "trying" to put down the power is the fun part, especially when you can lay down twin black strips through 5th gear.
