Topic: First 2010 Romanian Drag Race

Sunday 09 May 2010 I will attend to the most famous drag race from my country. This is 4th stage, 1st was in 2008, in may 2009 was the second and I was there with stock car just to test its factory performance, you can see some of the images/videos from this in my introduction post:

About this event:

They don't have separate classes between race cars and street cars like Hungarian Championship, so I will face any car with one axle drive with engines: 2.5L-3.8L Normally Aspirated or under 1.6L Wankel forced induction or 1.6L-2.5L forced induction. Doesn't matter if the engine came forced induction from factory or it was added to an NA engine.
Lightening is accepted (most of the cars will come with only driver seat and nothing else), all kinds of tires are accepted, gas from pump, race gas and E85 are accepted. 

I will go full interior, all I will loose will be factory air compressor and I will be on factory rims and tires 

In my group there are already 30 cars registered and if the history repeats the actual number of cars in this group will double based on-site registrations. Some nasty cars already pre-registered:
- 8 x old BMWs (E30 and E34) with Turbo added and another 3-4 M3s, among them 1st and 3rd place from previous stage 
- 2 x Fiat Coupe Turbo who took 2nd place at last stage, estimated power 360hp and very light
- 8 x VW/Seat/Skoda GTIs, all sharing almost same engine, all being FWD and with factory power around 180-230hp
- 1 Renault 5 Turbo + 3 Renault Megane RS
- Tuned Opel Speedster Turbo might attend, he will rule among all cars

With such a competition if I will make it to the final 8 it will be a HUGE performance for me, there is no way I can defeat my 4th place from previous stage.

Until now they lacked on timing system, they were using rally system which is completely inadequate, the reaction time was included in ET and they couldn't decide based on the system if a car launched too soon. This time they promised they will have a drag medium complexity timing system. 

They announce starting this year they will organize Romanian Drag Championship with 3 stages in their location (160 miles from my City) and another 3-4 stages to a location not revealed yet (they are not sure 100%) close to my city, this means if this will happen I will have drag races every month this year.

ANOTHER ROMANIAN CRAP RACE
 

These organizers never learn, they did 3 stages until now and all the time they kept having same issues over and over again, they promise every stage problems will be fixed, this one is no different.

They said they gonna have a semi-professional drag timing, this time they got one but wasn't working, they just received it a day before the event, they were doing tests at the event all cars waiting 3h hours for them to finish, no backup system not B plan, everything has being ruined from that moment. Rain came and go but leaving some few water on the strip, the other old problem was with people not respecting the lane and organizers weren't doing anything, when they were respecting the cars already in line we could race once at 20-30 mins which was pretty decent.

I thinking to decide to not go anymore to their races until they will not solve the problems.

My races:
- First race I did with my buddy who is helping me to all my mods with Mitsubishi Colt CZT. It was a little bit wet, he thought finally he will win against me after some dozens of my only win. I took off only half car length in front of him and he wasn't able to get that back.

- Second race I won against the new BMW Z4 3.5i with tune, 3L bi-turbo with 320hp whp. He launched later than me, even I missed 3rd gear for some time he wasn't able to come next to me. My GF (photographer and camera) decide to stop recording when the start process has begun

- Third race - vs a buddy Camaro Z28SS with many mods, I launched better, stayed a car length in front for 1-2-3 gears and lost when he got at high speeds gaining with more than a car length in front

This were all practice races, because no time the race has being in a pyramidal system, you loose you go home. I choose to race Seat Leon Cupra 2L Turbo FWD with exhaust, intake, IC and tune and doing 340hp. I think because I tried to do a burn and didn't succeed I sucked the clutch because I felt a lot of smell and when I launched the revs were going high but I wasn't going fast, I thought I was spinning the tires but I wasn't, shift in 2nd but missed the gear and lost all my advantage, again I lost up top starting with 3rd gear

So I was out, soon after that rain came again in big proportions and I was happy I lost that I could go home

Sucks when you expect to have a semi-profesional show and you end up with clowns.  Make sure you roll through the water if you are going to do a burn out, once you are out of the water 3.5-4k revs and pop the clutch as you floor it.  Don't baby the clutch let it out hard.

Sorry about all the frustration.  If people continue to sign up and the money flows in, the system will get better.  Get a few sponsors involved, get the local news to do a report on the event things like that will help raise the level of preparation.  Have you checked in to the possibility of you and your friends being involved in the set up of the event?  If you take over, you can run it right!

Gentleman Jack : if money will still flow they will continue same way, until they are not kicked in the balls they will not do anything, this is romanian style   I tried to get involved, I have spoken with some guys for papers, some other for possible sponsors but when I went to a meeting of our car club and present the case my club teammates said this is too big for us, way above our heads and I have dropped the ball. Damn this country, I will keep myself as a competitor but I will prefer to spend 3 times more and drive to Hungary for a nice and clean race.

I have decided, no more drag races in this part of country until they will make it right, I will not believe their promises anymore.

They announced next race on 6th of July, only 50 miles from my city. I will attend to that one too, if the problems of security and timing persist I will give up joining the races of this organizer and try to go on Hungary races only.

Never give up, an oppertunity to race is an opertunity to improve.  Besides it has to be safer than street racing.
