#2  Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia
Although old-time Appalachia has been immortalized in song, these days it can be difficult to locate that haven of rolling hills and wildflowers. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which stretches 469 miles along the southern Appalachian Mountains and links two national parks – Virginia’s Shenandoah and North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains – hits all the right notes. Drive the entire length if there's time (but remember the speed limit is 45 mph in most parts). For a shorter jaunt, fly into Asheville, N.C., and follow the parkway north for about 2 hours to Boone. Not a single interstate crosses the parkway. Instead of gas stations and motels, it’s flanked by picnic areas and hiking trails lined with dogwood, tulip trees, and red maples, with the mighty Appalachians as the backdrop. Highlights include Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge range (and site of the exhilarating Mile High swinging bridge), and the gardens and winery of the magnificent Biltmore Estate, a 19th-century Vanderbilt château near Asheville. Most sightseers do this road trip in spring and fall for the wildflowers and foliage, but the summer brings fewer cars, and the breezy, dry weather is near perfect.

Carol and I have done 5 of the 10:

Big Sur, California
Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia
Million Dollar Highway, Colorado--many times as well, used to vacation in Colorado, fishing, hiking, and yes ski trips were awesome!
Red Rock Scenic Byway, Arizona--raised the kids in Arizona, did these many times, the best at sunrise and sunset!
Seward Highway, Alaska--If you go to Alaska, breathtaking to say the least.  A lot of hiking and donkey paths, there are not many highways in Alaska.

This is an older thread that Joe posted way back but still relevent, and some really great drives and roads included!  Just wanted to give out a shout to others who may be vacationing or in the area of any of them.  They are all great drives and awesome scenic topography indeed!  If you are vacationing in the area of any of them this year, do yourself a treat and explore them.

Please pardon the partly off topic post but please note, the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and it's 318 curves in 11 miles is not included but at the Tennessee NASSM Carol and I drove it two or three times and yes it is tricky to negotiate and you have to stay glued to the road and pay attention, don't do it in the early morning cause there are to many motorcycles on it and somewhat distracting.  Lotta great roads in this country, please add some that you recommend!!! :drag::crazy::usa:
