Dyno tune by werks with 5457 precision turbo
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:20:32 PM »
Today I took my Gxp solstice for a dyno hp tune by Dave at Werks Performance in Plainfield Illinois. Really nice shop with some pretty cool cars sitting around the shop. He spent slightly over 5 hours doing the tune and fixing a few minor errors on the turbo install, me and a friend did the install last week. My last dyno tune @ Rev Hard netted me 292rwhp with the stock turbo.[Engine and head are all modified] Dave was able to get 355rwhp with the new turbo running 23 to 24 lbs boost.  Torque was just below . I asked Dave to post the Dyno run on this forum for you to view. That is a gain of 63hp. Should gain another 15 to 20hp gain in 3rd gear and above from the aftermarket intercooler. Dave thought he could get more hp if I used the car just for the Drag strip, but this car is just used on road racing courses with 5-10 times the duration of aggresive throttle and he wanted to be a little conservative.Tested car to 130mph on dyno All looked good.  Thank you Dave for a great job!!!!!

Congrats on the new added whp bro! :)

why is dave being conservative with your set-up?   You have a fully built block/head right?

my stock internals were able to handle 400hp.......

I think you can go around 28psi and have around 400whp.........and still BE CONSERVATIVE.....since you have a fully built engine and bigger turbo! :)   But DAVE might have some other thoughts tho....hopefully, he can chime in.

what IC will you be using?

But keep us updated!   Hopefully Dave can post the dyno soon!

Again, congrats!!! :)

Duck1313 sorry you only look at pictures, the car has a Hahn intercooler which they claim adds 23 hp. Dave would like me to record some data on the track and send it to him. You must remember I will be running 8  2.1 mile laps ==16 miles of pedal to the metal laps during practice [3 sessions = 50 miles plus 4 time attack runs] thats alot more than just running 1/4 mile.  Even with a race radiator ,temp will hit 217 to 220 degrees or higher. Plan on adding a differential cooler in the future.Sky I agree my engine can handle much more hp [800hp according to the ecotec engine build book]I like what Dave at werks did and strongly respect his knowledge and expertise. If don't place 1st or 2nd out of the ten cars in my class ,it will be my fault as driver.

ok!  I got it now bro.   16 miles of almost WOT the whole time is very stressful to your engine big time.   And Yes, the temp probably is skyrocketing the whole time.   Dave did the right thing, for being conservative under 400whp then!   Try it out for a season, then if you are comfortable, maybe turn the boost higher and get more whp, for the next season? :)

I used to have hahn IC....a very well made IC.   But I don't agree about the 23 hp that they claim.  I did a back to back dyno runs STOCK vs. HAHN, I only gained a mere 4-5 whp when I used Hahn IC using a stock turbo.  NOt really sure what will happen when used with a bigger turbo.   But definitely, HEAT SOAK is delayed using the bigger IC, which is the biggest advantage.

I would love to learn your track events.  I hope you don't mind, if I'll be under your wing to learn! :)

what company are you using for your differential cooler?

by the way, are you MT or auto?

absolutely welcome you,but remember a bigger intercooler doesnt kick in until your doing 65mph or higher on the road not on a dyno. Manual trans and I have not decided on a diff cooler. I understand you can use the one off a cts cadillac. Need to recover from the cost of my crash and turbo kit. Excited about your build. Raelly appreciate you input

oh cool! thanks!   I'm trying to learn from people with different race events.  Only thing I know is drag racing.  Now that I cant run legally at any strip since I don't have roll cage........i think its time for me to learn other race events.....like autocross, road race, etc :)

I'm also trying to recover from this project of mine...even though its not finish yet!  I'm soooo much in trouble when my wifey finds out! lol

Mine will not be done probably til next year, before spring 2011.   Not really in a hurry right now.....since I rather have the car to be in a covered garage for the first time this winter.   For the two years I had it, I always use it as my winter daily driver.....and I dont even have a garage! lol

so I guess, I'll follow your lead, on that diff cooler!  :)  uggggghhhh, i already told myself, I don't wana add any more mods after this compound turbo!  it doesnt stop....ggrrrrrrr

Major decrease in power racing my car in time attack after dyno tune and new turbo kit. Next day took off my race tires and found two large holes melted through my wheel well on front passenger side and many melted wires in my wiring harness. After further inspection found that turbo came very loose and so did the down pipe. Lucky the car did not catch fire. Cause- faulty cheap lock washers with the Dejon turbo kit. They all look like flat washers when they were removed. !st wrong instructions, then the flange was welded backwards. Dejon turbo kit stinks. Yes every thing was torqued down.

Sorry to hi-jack here but wanted to comment on this.  I asked DDM about doing a differential cooler and offered to pick up the CTS-V bolt-on kit (as shown in the Solstice Performance pub).  The kit runs about $1K but I hoped to pick it up somewhere for less, perhaps even used.  I figured Dave could take a look at it and rig something up for less than half that with a very sturdy attaching structure to boot.  Dave was somewhat amused at the idea but felt the market would be pretty small, and said he would want to play with it to make sure a diff cooler would even would work well on the Kappa.  I think if enough of us showed interest he might consider giving it a go.

The car seemed slow from the start and got slower with time as the turbo loosened. However I may have caused this problem myself. I blew a turbo tube off on my first accleration from start in practice followed by a engine light. I fixed the tube but also turned my battery off to clear light. This probably caused the AEM boost controller to drop to 30%.  I didn't realize this until later. I still took fourth out of 9 cars. Also got vsc light on because I don't have tire pressure sensors on my race wheels-plan to change that for next year. Yes I turned the vsc off. Diff. cooler Jegs sell parts to make your own kit for less money.

you should use HPT or a scanner of some sort to clear the codes instead of the battery to avoid this problem again.

Can you clear it at the track and does it take a long time. I have a hp tuner but have not used it. Did try to log run but said it was busy.

Hi Tom....thanks for the PM and advises!  Appreciate it!

Kenny is right, HPT will clear your codes in minutes.   Personally, Especially that you have a new turbo set-up, and tune.......it would be nice to log your runs at the track to see what's going on.

You might also wana think about getting DEI turbo heat shield....for insulating purposes, especially you're at WOT most of the time at the track for long periods of time.....
