Factory turbo improvement-suggestions
« on: October 04, 2010, 10:34:31 AM »
I have a stock turbo i bought from a guy at a nice price.
initially i bought it to have a spare just in case, since i m planning on keeping my GT for a long time.
now, i m thinking of taking it to a specialised turbo guy here in Greece and mod it to get some extra hp.

i have consulted a GT friend and we have some things in mind, but i thought you guys can give me some piece of advice as well.

any ideas of what the turbo guy could modify on our stock turbo (with low cost) to make it more efficient and produce more hp?

Factory turbo is bottle necked by turbine housing as far as I know. So if he can do something with this than I might be interested.

You could see what difference changing the pitch, curvature, and number of blades on the wheels would produce. I don't think this would be a low cost option though.

Brian of BNR is currently working on a couple of kappa owners' k04 turbos, and will be plugging in gt28 components inside.  I believe even the housing will be modified/machined inside.

He has been very successful with other turbos.

This is not just a "big wheel" upgrade.

I believe this is the real deal....

Yup get in touch with bnr if you want your turbo upgraded http://bnrsupercars.com/
For $1100 he'll stuff gt2860rs guts in it, for $1300 he'll stuff gt2871 parts in it, these are complete chra's(compressor wheel/center section/turbine wheel) not just wheel upgrades.
Some pics of an upgraded k04 here http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/5266671-post82.html

If i remember right its...
Stage 1 - 2860 with the stock compressor cover, turbo looks completely stock
Stage 2 - 2860 with a higher flowing compressor cover + higher pressure actuator
Stage 3 - 2871 with a higher flowing compressor cover + higher pressure actuator

Interesting indeed! Anyone knows how many more hp gains from each stage compared to a stock turbo?

shabster, I think you are right.   Brian told me 3 months ago, while we were on the phone, since I sent him one of my turbo that a member bought from me.   I wasn't really paying attention, since I'm not gonna get one .

basically, if you get the stage 1 (GT2860)....you'll get a similar HP that a regular GT2860 garrett turbo will offer, from what BNR told me.

go to the garrett website to see the hp that 2860 and 2871 will offer....

i contacted the turbo guy and he said that at a reasonable price, the only thing he could do is (in a few words) to replace the wheel with a bigger one, similar to Audi S3 K04 turbo.
he said it will be able to handle up to 400 hp and it will look stock from outside. he estimates about 370-380 hp for the GT

the good thing is the price. 300 euros (special price because of a common friend), meaning about $400.
i think in US this upgrade is something like 1000$.

in the next few days, i ll decide if i will go on with it

are we there yet??? are we there yet??

most probably i will go on with it. the only problem seems to be that i will need to spend 2-3 working days (removing turbo and visit to the turbo guy-replacing the turbo etc) which is not so easy at this moment...

as far as dynos, i still have done no dyno, consider Kagem's dyno as my dyno, coz we are almost the same.
when i do it, i will test on the road against Kagem and other friends that i know how their cars perform.

Arabas, are you just upgrading the wheel into a bigger one?  For $400, that's not bad at all.   Because usually, they cost $800 and higher.
That's cheap indeed.

Highest I've seen with those big wheel upgrade is around 320whp....

But the BNR turbo upgrade, is not just a wheel upgrade.  And will cost more than $1000.  Huge potential in whp increase though.....

anyways, good luck with your big wheel upgrade.  Tuning will be the key for that!

That's usually how much wheel swaps cost, no idea why we're being gouged so much here with double the price. A compressor wheel and machining doesn't cost $1000.

However the compressor wheel alone will not net 320 WHP probably more like 245 WHP, then a good tune and it will get you around the 300WHP.
With 300WHP you are looking at 360 BHP or crank horse power.

Thought I would update this thread, we have been running the BNR stage 3 here for about 2 months now and here the latest dyno run from it:

That is on 93 octane, no meth/water, intercooler, high flow cat, exhaust and an intake. Most likely with an off the shelf tune most are going to be int he 355-360whp range SAE. I will update more next week!
