Help: Changing DIC and head unit lighting
« on: November 10, 2010, 10:21:00 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to change that dull orange of the DIC and the head unit to a different color (red in this case).
Or if there is an LED alternative that can be installed for these?

You can try some red rubylith over the display area.  Changing the color of the ACTUAL display will require new display panels...  If you can make out the gauge in my avatar, I managed to change it from the greenish color in Pontiacs to reddish orange with rubylith.  The result would probably be better starting with the amber in Saturns.

You can also check out this thread for a better pic of the whole gauge cluster:  http://www.kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=3695.20  That link should take you to page2.  Third post down should have a good pic.

Sorry, but the DIC and the radio use the same core tech: VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display).  They naturally show as light green and the filters can change the color.  However, they do not emit a full, broad, spectrum of light and have little in the red area of the spectrum.  As 2kwk says, you could get more of a deep orange with a strong red filter, but you'll never get red - plus you'll cut down the brightness of the display too.

This was my DIC through a red filter.  This is as close to red as you'll get:

It was too dim for me, so I managed to go back to the grey-white similar to OEM on a Solstice, by using a piece of a Roscolux gel filter #34 (flesh pink).
