new dyno graph
« on: January 08, 2011, 04:56:23 PM »
ok guys this tune is set to 26 psi.

original this tune was set to 28 psi but we got a tad bit of knock so vince turned it down and we had no further knock and he checked it 100 times over.

1.so first run i herd a knock noise or banging. it didn't sound like rocks but it did sound like what most have experienced the w/g banging. it only lasted for about a second then it went away as we got further in the rpms.
2nd pull the car made no funny noises whatsoever.
2. i have also read on the forums under heavy load the car may knock if your in to high of a gear.
3. i asked the owner if he could take a look and see if he saw anything after the pulls. he was very nice and could of said no to me it was a dyno day and there where tons of cars behind me.
so after looking he said there might b just a slight bit of knock and to pull the timing back just a tad bit more,  but he wasn't sure if it was knock or the w/g he told me i should probably just be on the safe side and take the timing down just a tad bit.
4. so i guess my question is is this knock or the waste gauge banging around or was the car under heavy load. if the car was knocking wouldn't you hear it knock all the way threw the power band.
btw every-one was impressed with the solstice they thought the car was a joke when they where strapping it to the dyno hehehe.

My advice would be to find someone in your area with HPTuners and do some logs or ask Vince about it, far easier and more clear than to base on others experience.

I have a curiosity cause I see this is a Dynojet with SAE and smoothing 3 and trying to understand more the readings of american dynos to "convert" in my local ones:
- your mods are only trifecta tune?
- you said it was a dyno day, any other LNFs there, especially stock (Kappa or even Cobalt)?

Don't recall how your car is equipped. July I dyno'ed with 100 octane gas, and it looked exactly like yours but a bit higher. Some of that difference would be you showing SAE correction vs mine showing STD correction. You A/F mix is certainly more stable than mine. As for the knocking on the first run, it may be that the car was not fully warmed up. Having been right next to my car both times it's been dyno'ed, I never heard any clatter at all.

Thanks for posting this.

slowsol, how much time and how many miles since you loaded the tune and made the dyno pull?
i have noticed that with Vince's tunes, the car needs at least 50 miles driving (not WOT) to get properly adjusted (learned by the ECU) since the flash.

i had 26-27 psi on my tune with stock turbo and no knock. but before that, i had a tune, same psi that had some knock in 5th gear, low rpm.
i would suggest though not to push the car, (WOT) below 3K rpm.

for what is worth, if we had a more "tight" 6 speed manual tranny, tuning without knocking would be easier...
car would climb the rpm range much easier...

yeah most seem to agree no wot unless your in the proper gear. um car has mayb 50 with the new tune or just a little under

yeah most of the kappa/ cobalt forums agree no wot in low rpms
the tune has probably less then or just over 50 miles i put it on yesterday.

maybe this wastegate bang you heard, was instant surge...
i remember with stock turbo, when i pushed the car in high gear and low rpm, i could see the needle on my analogue boost gauge tremble a bit at certain rpm (for just a bling of an eye).
didn't know what that was back then, but now i believe that it is possible to get a bit of surge with tune and stock turbo at low rpm, cause the engine (due to stock valve timing) is not able to suck all the sudden air that the turbo produces at that certain load

Great numbers. Time to uncork the exhaust and get the rest of the power that is hiding in there.

I've had this banging noise problem you describe. It always goes away after the car warms up.
