Review: DDM Works - VDi Lambo Doors
« on: January 22, 2009, 11:35:21 AM »
DDM Works sells the VDi Lambo Doors. The install How-To thread is http://kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=31.0

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: Doors don't open up as far and the door open detents are disabled so unless the door is in the up position, it can close on you.

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: The door will hit the door latch mechanism if not pulled down to the bottom before closing.   Go-N Def has a fix of some foam pads to help preventing damage.

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: The hood has to be opened first and closed last if you want the doors up at the same time.  (they will hit if you don't)

Pros: Looks cool

Cons: The hinges are not powder coated, just spray painted.  They are also made of mild steel instead of stainless so they rust if the paint chips.  We are already seeing rust on them.

Difficult to install if you are not a pro...    Dealers must be instructed on how to open and close the door.

I don't regret installing them.

I am going to agree very much with Joe's review.  He installed my doors and I assisted in a small way, because I had no clue what to do and he was the professional.  The doors are not for the inexperienced to install...it requires cutting of the fenders (we used a saw but a plasma cutter would have been better).

Pros: Looks awesome, you don't have to worry about hitting another person's doors in a tight parking spot, did I mention that they look awesome?, it turns heads everywhere, easier to clean the bottom of the door

Cons: Doors do not open out as far (maybe 1/2 as much as stock), hinge rust because of what Joe mentioned above, you MUST tell anyone who works on the car not to pull them out fast and physically show them how to use it beforehand- realigning the doors is VERY difficult if they are slammed the wrong way and come out of alignment (I tweaked mine just for better fitment and it was a PIA)

Warning: You must open the hood first before the doors are flipped up, and then put the doors down before you put the hood down or else there can be major damage (just ask Joe LOL)

I would do them again in a heartbeat...I love them.  You just have to be someone that really takes care of the car.

So when you arrive somewhere and park, you can only open up the doors enough to get out of the car and then close it?  You cant get out and leave the door up on it's own without having to open the hood ?

You would have to pop the hood release, get out without keeping doors up, put doors down if they are up, open the hood, then put doors up.  To close the hood, put the doors down first or you will close it right into your door.

That ...kinda...really...sucks :(

So how did VDI take pics of those cars with the doors up and the hood closed ?

I'm confused...you can have the hood up and the doors closed.

If you opened the doors when the hood is up, you would just have to close them again before you put down the hood.

VDI has pics of sols with the Hood closed, and the doors open and up all the way.  From what I understand though, with your car....if you want to open the doors all the way, you gotta have the hood open, so why was vdi able to open their doors while keeping the hood closed?

I'm sorry if this is confusing lol.

I think what they are trying to say is that if you want to open/close the hood you have to have the doors closed or else you are going to hit the doors with the hood.

The doors will open fully with the hood up or down.

Exactly...the doors will fully go up, even with the hood closed.

If you have both the doors up and the hood up, then you have to put the doors down first before you close the hood.

I have to agree. I did mine myself. Not incredibly hard to install. They are kind of a pita to use, but only because they are different from every other car I get into and out of every day. It's hard to get accustomed to using them. Then again that difference is what makes them cool.

The only thing I miss is the door actually staying in the out position...it almost knocks my coffee out of my hand in the morning when it swings back (the street is angles).  I usually have too much stuff in my hand to put the door all of the way up in the morning.

In the usage (getting in and out of the car) aspect, they leave a little to be desired.

In the esthetic aspect, I can't get enough looks and compliments!

I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!!

Agreed, although I am getting used to the in-out method with the newer doors...I don't always put them up.

Just wondering, for those that have the VDI kit installed....do you think the minor problems you are experiencing is due to the design of this kit in particular?  In other words, is there a different maybe better kit out there, or is this really just some annoyances that are inherent to lambo doors in general??

I really don't think it is the kit.  It's just how the lambo doors are in general...and I don't recall there even being another kit out there for our cars.  The pro's far outweight the cons.  You could make a pro and con list for the stock doors and still ask the same question...ya know?

I'm sure that if the car came stock with Lambo doors, there would be less issues, but it would take a major re-design of the surrounding parts.

Of course, then they would be called Kappa Doors....

If you follow the link to the install thread on the  first post, there are pics with the doors up and the hood is closed.  There isn't any clearance issues that way.

The problem is when you try to open the hood when the doors are up.  It is safe to pop the hood with the doors up, but the doors must be lowered to raise/lower the hood.

I don't raise the doors much, I use them normally and I raise them only when see people staring at the car as I drive up.
