What would be awesome in an OBDII Option
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:32:26 PM »
I would love a simple device that would take OBDII data and convert it to composite video for displaying on head units.  Does this exist?

They were making double-din carputers that would run Windows XP/Vista that you could load HP Tuners on and Wa La, there you have it...  Only problem is, they stopped making it...

I know patrol cars use computers and it would be no problem monitoring with hp tuners.  The problem is where to mount it?  In front of the air bag ,passenger side would be a good spot if you do not mind losing safety and its probably illegal.

Did a little research and found this one and I'm seriously considering it.  I can't wait to get my Tax Free and Combat Pay that the government owes me for 14 months!

According to his needs, that won't work.  He's looking for a way to take OBDII data and put it on a head unit.  What you were looking at would me he would lose his stereo options and have to view it on a seperate screen...

I disagree.  It has to do with the original post.  Feel free to start another thread about car PC's if you want.

Actually, some of the options in the list that Kelu posted could work well, specifically, the ones without screens. (he linked to a list of search results)

My assumption is that he has a head unit with a screen on it that takes composite input that allows you to plug in a game system or something.

If you installed a car PC into the glovebox or somewhere else you can take the SVGA out and  convert to composite and plugged into his head unit. But he would not be able to control the computer from the screen.

Jeb, to answer your question, I don't think there is any device apart from a PC to do what you asked in your original post. So if you end up with doing a Car PC, I would replace the head unit and use the Car PC for all of your in flight entertainment with a touch screen, both GoNDef and Kelu's links are suitable options.

If you don't want to go with the complexity of dealing with a CarPC. Get a DashDaq, which has a seperate screen, or some aeroforce gauges to monitor your OBD parameters.

I think a car PC would probably be the best.  Match that with a obd2 to usb input.  Im looking at the 1k range

Kelu, the machines on that page are either underpowered or too big for a car application imo.  I think the double din carpc will be the best option
