Paging NormSky - I got your next task ...
« on: February 17, 2011, 09:23:16 PM »
Norm,

Time for a new task/project.  Fit C5/C6 brakes on Kappa w/ the least amount of or no mods.

Why, you asked ?  Because it's cheap (rotors only $40-50 a piece) and it works and then I can sport the red C5 Z06 calipers on my Kappa  :poke:

I'll come up from Columbus and help you out  :D

Looking at dropping weight off the front calipers. C5 rear calipers on the front was very close by my guesstimates with bigger piston diameter and smaller diameter rotor. Should be better front to rear bias than the front bias now. Another summer project.  :)

Well, I was hoping for the opposite.  The front C5 rotor is some 12+" diameter.  The caliper is the same design, sliding 2-piston.  Maybe more thermal capacity and just maybe enough for track duty without having to go fancy and expensive with Brembo/StopTech/aftermarket brakes.  Plus, replacement rotors can be bought at almost any auto parts store.

The rear maybe PITA due to a possibility of differences in parking brake dimensions, but the front is usually a whole lot simpler.  The hub diameter should be the same and the C5 rotor will need to have the Kappa PCD drilled; no big deal.

Bonus point in the aesthetic department.  A larger rotor fills out a (larger) wheel better and it looks more intimidating (eg. "Check this out !  It runs Corvette brakes !") :D

The rear Kappa brake is cable operated just like the C5. Emergency brake is inside of the rotor which does not hcr the holding power as an inner brake but should do.  :)

POS VETT not sure if you have seen older threads, but I have run my stock brakes with ATE DOT 4 fluid and Porterfield street pads at Watkins Glen and other tracks and they held up pretty good. Got a little fade a few times, but overall they held up great.

Going to CarboTech this season and I am hoping to have absolutely no fade at all even at the Glen which has lots of straights.

Lime Rock is in 8 weeks. I'm just doing HPDE not racing, but the stock brakes have been just fine for me with upgraded pads.

Correct; but just like the 5-lug conversion on the CTS-V, when I tried to use '10 Camaro SS rotors, the parking brake drum was too big and I wasn't about to convert the CTS-V parking brake to '10 Camaro SS parking brake.

I guess one target at a time.  Front first and see if the rear is as easy.

Bonus point for trying 1g CTS-V Brembo brakes (and its 14" rotors) too :)  I heard the calipers were cheap.

I have not read about that. I guess this is more aesthetic than anything.  I'm pretty sure the C5 rotors are heavier and is going to take more power to accelerate them.
