Wet weather autocross tire pressure
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:37:48 PM »
The first autocross events of the season are coming up soon, and the weather is still rainy and cold.  I've read a number of posts about recommended tire pressures in good conditions, but not in crappy conditions.  Does anyone have recommendations for tire pressures when the course is wet?

I haven't experimented much with it, only because I've never run in the rain.  However, I'd venture a guess that you'd want pressures similar to when it is dry...just about to where the contact patch is at its maximum without rolling over.

I'm sure others will chime in as well...I'm looking forward to other opinions!

I think SOB recommends a few more pounds in the Wet.

Thanks.  I live in the Northwest.  If I don't drive in the rain, I don't drive at all.

huh, never seen you out before - i ran a grey gxp 'vert last year with my codriver (in BS), and just picked up a coupe.  engine is in pieces right now, so won't be running my car this weekend though (codriver's 350Z in CS most likely).  if you're running sunday, i'll look for you (i'll be doing tech).
anyway, early in the season in the cold, on both *specs or hwets, i usually run 4-6psi lower vs. a6 dry temps (both front and rear) to build up heat.  i'm not of the "run higher pressures to bow the middle of the tire and plow water out of the way" camp.

This is a little dependent on the tire you are running.

Can you provide some more information on your setup.

Thanks

I'm running Star specs.  Stock suspension, so far, except for the Probeam and Backbone.

I'm a newbie.  I did half a day last fall, at the last event of the season.  I was at the morning practice session today.  I hope to be there tomorrow morning too, so I look forward to meeting you.

With the star specs, I'd leave them at the same pressure you do for dry.

They do good in the rain so you don't want to over inflate them and have only the center of the tires touching

Allot would  depend on track surface too. Bumpy surface in the rain is not fun. I'd go as low as you can without deforming the contact patch. Suspension stiffness will ply a role too.

Wet separates the men from the boys.  :)
