fender flares
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:54:35 AM »
Been thinking about fitting some wide wheels and tires, but don't want them sticking out past the fenders. Right now it looks as though 8.5" wide with a 55 offset is the biggest I can fit for street driving. I'd like to fit 10" wide with a 55 offset, but am afraid it'll stick out too far. Does anyone make fender flares for our cars? I checked Norm's website and didn't see anything there. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Jeff ; There Shops that can do Flares with your existing fender Metal I don;t think you would be happy with fiberglass or other add-ons . Just don't if it can be done w/fenders in place and for sure you can Do the Paint work yourself.

This one looks kinda cool for the miata, depends if you are looking for the racecar look or a proper finished look.

two things, firs it's a miata :barf:, second the flare is :barf: because you can see it, detracts from the smooth lines of the Solstice.  That may be ok for the Sky's though

Sometimes seeing the flare and the bolts looks cool for a race car kinda look.

I'd never do this to my sky.

Actually,  18" x 9" OZ wheels........fit perfectly on my sky, when I used to have them.

Not sticking out at all....and tucked in nicely without rubbing issues.

Ha! I was just thinking why do all the Solstice people constantly want to change the look of their cars meanwhile the Sky people know their cars are perfect as-is?:poke:

I'm not changing the look. The wheels/tires are part of a suspension/handling upgrade. My coupe otherwise looks just fine!

Oh, 9" OZ's would be great if I could find them at a price I was willing to pay. Too many toys in the driveway and not enough cash to throw at all of them.

Sad but true. Estimate for the wife's sky repaint is 6K+. Her car has no dents or dings and only a few rock chips. Evem keeping the same color. Labor is crazy on painting or bodywork!

That was big on the datsun Z's but I don't think you need to worry about it on a kappa
If 275s are good enough, you can probably get away with 295s with most states not bothering you unless you live in one of the stupid states.

Fortunately, I'm qualified to do my own paint work, so I absorb the labor cost in-house. I'm not interested in doing any bodywork to the coupe, just removable bolt-ons (ok, maybe two sided tape-on). Maybe as part of Norm's ground effects package. Hey Norm...are you reading this......?????

Rogue, is this therefore going to be only a cosmetic mod?

Yes, and keep the road rash off the body panels.

Hey Jeff, sounds like a good idea but just be careful, Tammy was saying at the St. Patrick's Day Parade that she has functional side ones and the water keeps getting up into her Sky.

You can always use the pipe in the wheel well method, since you are painting anyway.

Yes, I could. But, I'm not going to. No irreversible mods....I'm expecting coupe values to skyrocket and I need to keep it as pristine as possible....it's my retirement fund!  :-)

I'm expecting coupe values to skyrocket

You know something us coupe owners don't?

I love most wide body cars when they look stock, problem with the Kappa is that the front & rear fascia's are part of the design.  Even the ZL1 flares (while menacing looking) still give that boy-racer look to them.
Here's my fav method because they widen the car from the top of the hip lines and they widen the fascias:

You missed the smiley face. The skyrocketing values comment was truly tongue in cheek. I agree with you about the integrated look, however a bit of boy racer look might add to the bad ass attitude...you know...make the ricers sit back and take notice...

Darn, I was hoping you were serious ;)  It took me several months to realize that boy-racer, F&F, comments were basically "in" jokes between auto journalist until the terms started to be used so prevalently that it didn't leave much doubt what the intent meant.  Kind of reminds me of the famous Dolly Parton saying if it's flashy or trashy I like it.  I'm somewhat the same for the auto world because I do like stuff of questionable taste.  If we all liked the same thing the world would be a very boring place.

You can see my car with custom metal flares in the GTO hood section. Norm didn't make this product it was all down in house by a local shop to me.
