TOP GEAR KAPPA CHALLENGE- GJ vs CT
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:06:13 PM »
OK, all.  Here we go with KPF's first ever TOP GEAR CHALLENGE!

CT-Solstice VS Gentleman Jack

CT will be leaving CT (duh....) at the same exact time that GJ is leaving his folks house in MA (Middleton MA to be precise)

CT will be traveling by CAR using what ever expressways, highways, toll roads, pot holes, back alleys or bridges he chooses.

GJ will be traveling by way of "parents" to the airport where he will wait in long lines, deal with grumpy airline employees, and endless crying children.  Board a plane, fly to BWI and then take public transportation (CritterTaxi) to Joe's garage (after stopping at a Dunkin Donuts for a cup of coffee.... hey, they don't have DD here in San Diego, I need to get my fix when I can....)

Total miles to be traveled for CT will be: 387 miles (CT - I guesstimated you hometown to be Thompson CT... please correct and I will adjust: EDIT: New London...) and Google says it should take 7 hours and 31 minutes, but what do they know.

Total Miles to be traveled for GJ will be:
19 miles driving to the airports (31 minutes)
413 miles from BOS to BWI (check in, wait.... wait..... wait.... board... wait... wait.... wait.... FLY.... wait....wait... Land...wait...wait... wait... deplane.... wait.... wait...  ok you get the picture....) 3 hours 15 minutes
79 miles from BWI to Joe's Garage (1 hour 48 minutes)
_________________________________
511 miles with a total travel time of: 5 hours 34 minutes.

So it looks like this should be an easy win for the FLIGHT right?  Well, if any of you have EVER seen Top Gear.... Jeremy always wins....

EDIT: updated Place of departure for CT...

I am from New London, CT.

My total travel time to BWI is 4.5 hours. I can be at Joe's in a little over 5.5 hours under "normal" traffic conditions.

Optimal traffic conditions, I can be at Joes in about 4 hours and 45 mins.

I think I can "win" this one!

CT I-95 flows about 70 mph for 86 miles, NYC flows at 65 mph for 21 miles, NJTP flow can be 80-85 mph on a good Thursday evening/Friday morning. Its only 105 miles long from NYC to MD. MD is the key to the win. No cops, I win! With cops, I will lose more than the race!

Unfortunately you guys won't be able to talk to each other on the phone... Unless there is in flight wifi and updates can be posted to the forum?

Just to make it more like the show where we can follow along.

Oh, I am sure we could make this work.

7.5 hours! BS! Its only 4 hours driving with the flow to MD. I drive to VA in 8 hours. Every other weekend...

Only rule that makes this fair is, I get the FULL 1 hour before flight required check in time. No short changing me by leaving so he gets to the airport 5 mins before his plane leaves and has them "hold" the door.

We both leave respective houses at the same time. And he has to make 2 "pit-stops" for 10 minutes each. To simulate filling a gas tank.

LOL!

Kenny,
I might have to just pony up and buy the in flight wifi for this... unless someone has an acct they can PM me for a "one time only"

CT will have a harder time updating since he will be driving.  we don't want any "texting while driving" mishaps.  Perhaps someone could be near a computer and "assist" CT along the way?

WAIT.... WHAT???? have you ever seen the show?  No pits stops for me....

Yes, we leave our respective houses at the exact same time.  matter of fact, we can be on the phone together when we start the cars.  I am honorable enough to be at my folks house if that's where I tell you I'm starting.  A dinner isn't worth me cheating.

I will find my flight itinerary and leave my folks house at whatever normal time I would leave for any flight.  Just think, if I miss my flight because I cut it to close, easy win for you  :)

My biggest challenge other than the airport is my public transportation.  My taxi driver could be subject to many pit stops along the way....  small bladder I think....

Hmmm... making it a real challenge.

Let me talk to my "buddies" tonight on my way to VA. I will let you know tomorrow!

Sounds like a pretty fair deal so far.

I have voice text but being on the phone with someone else doing the typing is a much better deal for me. A texter by proxy makes much more "sense" to me.

I'm sure someone on the forum could transcribe phone calls during the journey. But if we're all in our cars driving to the meet as well we'll be all checking our phones to watch the status. Half of us won't even make it to the meet we'll be crashed!

I'll sign my self up as the mobile road block in northern Maryland, so we can get footage of Clarkson (AKA CT) swearing and banging his hand on the steering wheel and muttering about "lousy slow bloody Amurcan drivers".

But who's going to film Hammond/May (AKA GJ) running across the airport concourse dragging a suitcase full of bottles of GJ?  (Extra points if the suitcase springs-open, littering bottles all over.)

Chief scmief.... That and a dollar fifty will get you a small coffee...

Nice try CT.  But you're going to have to do better than that.  Did I forget to mention I'm on a private plane now?  Oops.... Must have slipped my mind... Got to love MarquisJet.....

LOL!

DISAGREE! You are required to make "pit-stops" he is not, just as he is required to sit around and wait an hour before "leaving" on his flight and you are not.

You both leave your house at the same time, you both arrive at whatever time it takes, delays and pit stops included. Stop trying to cut 20 mins off your time!

Critter, I hope you're keeping your eye on this.

I like to take the underdog side (this is how the weak one is named, right?)

So one of the few times: I'm on GJ side especially because it doesn't inflict his driving or his invisible car
