Wheelwell breaks up AGAIN!
« on: March 21, 2011, 08:51:56 PM »
52k on my Sol and this is the 2nd wheelwell I've replaced.
Here you can see the 8 inch rip. Notice that its just coming apart at the bolt.

Sooooo...out with the old!

When you install them, you should tighten the top bolts first and work your way to the bottom.  That won't put stress on the liner.

It took but one week for my wheel well to crack again...has nothing to do with which bolts r tightened first...has to do with the cheap material used.  They r paper thin.  Thank goodness I still am under warranty...but ICS has them at a reasonable price...always keep a spare.

You are making sure not to re-use the screw/bolts around the edges, right?  The recommended procedure now is to use "Christmas tree" push pins.  I see the liner cracked aroun the screw/bolt in your photo.  The plastic pins have more 'give'.

I only cracked one recently leaning on it doing engine work... never cracked one in four years of autox and dd.

How,when did yours crack?

Stock wheels/tires and suspension not lowered?

I ask because I am 100% stock, and it looks like you rubbed, either before or after the crack.

20K miles and nary a mark.

Wonder what's causing yours to go?  Freezing weather?  Driving thru deep puddles and splashing water up?

The only other thing I can think of that makes plastic extra brittle is temperature but I'll blame it on the ole subcontractor low-bidding system, cheaper price = cheaper quality.

How does that rationalle work with people like me and DBGXP who drive in way subfreezing temps, snow ice and rain year round, and lots of miles?

IMHO It is an install/alignment issue. If stressed at install, the vibration will cause it to crack eventually.

Critter,
I've been poking a lot of fun at you recently, so out of respect, I'm going to leave this completely alone and make no funny remarks or comments what so ever on the fact that your belly cracked your wheel well.  The only comment I will make is to say that I will replace your wheel well at MMMM8 if you buy a new one.  Other than that, I make no comment / harassment / or otherwise torment you about the post you made.

:bs:  How did your belly get all the way from your "supervisor" chair over to your car when the hood was open?  The fact that the hood was open implies that work was being done and we all know that means someone else was being watched by you.

For the record I have a replacement liner that will be getting replaced again due to cracks this one only lasted about 400 miles and the fasteners weren't too tight, you could still spin the washers with your fingers.  When they went to replace it they found that the new one they were going to install was also cracked.  Based on how they ship them I am guessing that the cracks start there and grow in size.

Sometimes you have to be 'right there' when you supervise.

I melted big holes in my wheel well when my new turbo came loose during a Time attack event. Thanks again to Dejon for the crappy Turbo kit they sell. Maybe we should talk to Norm about making Kevlar wheel wells

My dealership states that they wont cover them under warranty. Says "its not on this list here of parts that the extended bumper to bumper warranty covers"

I brought mine in under the extended bumper to bumper warranty...I told them to read it.  The service tech stated he had to speak with his manager after seeming displeased with me...then he comes back...with a smirk begrudgingly on his face...it is covered.  I have the GM warranty, although it had SATURN printed on it.  The warranty states what is not covered...wheel wells r not on that list.
