Who has a oil pressure gauge installed in their car?
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:27:44 PM »
I am interested in finding out how many of you have installed a oil pressure gauge in your car. Secondly, has anyone noticed a drop in pressure during Drag,Autocross,or Road racing etc. Since I am one of the unlucky that blew a engine last year [piston] that was not covered by warranty, we need input to help prevent engine failure. It is well documented that piston failure occurs[oem pistons suck]

Per GM's shop manual the LNF should have a min oil pressure at 1000 RPM of between 50-80 PSI.

That's a big "mistyped" mistake, numbers don't even match for a mistake... "158" - "94:poke: :D

And THEN there is 50-80 psi at 1000 RMP. Coolness.  :D :D :poke:

I was looking at the oil temp instead of the pressure...

Fixed that typo for you Bob, at least I had the right letters just in the wrong order.

I like how the minimum is a range.  If you have 85 psi at 1000 revs is that too much for a min? :idk:

Well i just replaced the sensor on my gauge . At idle 8 to 12 lb,then it goes to 38 @2600  43 to 45 @ 6000rpm. Since the sensor I used was not the same diameter as the original that came with the gauge,I'm guessing the gauge is a 0 to 60lb and the sensor I know is off a 0 to 100lb gauge. So I know this will make the numbers off, sorry I am not going to spend another $35 to put the correct one on it.This is the pressure off the oil line going to the Turbo

That sounds a bit low for engine oil pressure, manual says 50-80psi at 1000rpm, for turbo oil pressure its ok.

Agree Shabby ,but I have never had an engine oil light go off. Using the wrong sensor isn't helping matters. I would think the pressure going to the turbo is the same as the engine but I might be wrong. Also of interest is the fact that it takes 3 to 5 minutes for oil temperature to catch up with the water temperature. So please make sure your engine is well warmed up before you race.

I put a T connector off the oil line going to the turbo and ran the oil line to a electrical oil pressure sensor

I do know that most turbos require a restrictor somewhere in their incoming oil line, especially if they are ball bearing turbos.

MGar, I wondered about a oil restriction for turbo but your the first to mention it. However,I would think it would be built into the turbo oil inlet.

They are typically in the inlet.  However, I don't know in our particular application if that is the case because I have not gotten into it yet, as my turbo has yet to fail.
