Topic: Are Long Tube Headers legal in STR ?

Am I interpreting this correctly?

I've been reading the SCCA SOLO rules and it's my understanding that long tube headers would not be compliant with:

" 14.10 D. Exhaust manifolds and headers (including downpipes) may be replaced with alternate units which are emissions-legal. ......... This allowance does not
permit relocation of the catalytic converter............"

To use long tube headers the CAT has to be relocated outside the engine compartment, thus they would not be incompliant with 14.10.D.

You are correct.  You need to take that statement as literal as it sounds.
If you Cat is not exactly where it was stock,
then it bumps you to a different class.

Looks like I'll have to go with the Solo Performance Shortie http://www.solo-performance.com/exhaustk.php. They claim a 7 HP gain in performance. They also make a high flow CAT as well as a CAT back exhaust systems.

Send a note up to SP to find out where the cat is located relative to the frame rails, etc. Then, once installed, you will need a TUNE !!!!

This design looks to be less restrictive.

Unless you WANT to keep the car very quiet, that exhaust system is excessive. The C/Stock and STR Kappas at Nationals were running no more than cats and a 2.5" straight exhaust. A high flow cat WILL raise the dB level, and SP has some very nice resonators. I have NO cat, a 3" single exhaust, and 14" resonator, with resukts being a streetable exhaust that is WELL under SCCA noise limits.
