Lucky? Or Unlucky?
« on: May 21, 2011, 04:17:13 PM »
Noticed this MF Screw in my front tire this morning.  No symptoms, no leaks, just the giant-a$$ed shiny piece of metal sticking out, proud as you please:

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Luckily, it went in sideways, and doesn't seem to have gone deep enough to puncture the belts, but it IS a giant screw and it left a big void:

This is the screw, look how much it wore down - didn't bend, just wore.  Must've been in there for some time:

SO... my question is, am I lucky?  It didn't puncture the tire and I can go on my merry way and think nothing more of it?  Or am I UNlucky to have got this huge screw in my tire that's likely weakened the outer tread, which could expand and/or separate at any moment?

Aggghh!  :gaah:

Go on your merry way.  :2c:  I've had that happen in several tires on several different vehicles & never had any issue from it.

I remember picking up a screw in my S.O. 1995 Victory Red (Bright Red-Primary) Pontiac Firebird Formula equipped with the Corvette 5.7 Liter SFI V8 Engine and equipped with a 6-Speed Manual Transmission.  I still have the sticker that shows 17 City MPG and 26 Highway MPG. Standard Vehicle price, $19,099.00 plus $2,732 in options, and $500.00 Destination Charge so out the door, $23,331.00.  Andy Kline Pontiac gave me a discount but can't remember how much it was.  Back in those days I don't believe it was much of a discount.

One rear tire kept loosing air, and after awhile, I decided to check it out and found the screw.  Dealer patched it and we were good to go again.  It's a good idea to follow up when you have a slow leak.

Ron,

You had a Firebird? I had no idea!  What color was it? Did it have a 6 cyl?

It still counts as unlucky, but it's not too bad.  There are many shades of gray within the realm of unlucky.

Back on topic. The wife's redline had a similiar problem but with a large nail instead. Went in sideways and have not had any problems with the tire.

I think that you were lucky. I was always told to go to the tire repair place BEFORE removing any object from a tire just in case.

But I'm glad it worked out for you.
