Rodos island (Rhodes) Auto-X June 26th
« on: June 02, 2011, 07:01:41 AM »
a GT friend who live on the island of Rodos (aka Rhodes) - not to be confused with Rhode island  -is member of a commitee organising an auto-X.
don't expect anything huge and fancy like the ones u have in US and Canada, but it is a nice try to promote the sport in a country that has long racing tradition but poor present.

so, he invited me.
the plan so far is to get the ferry (12hrs ride) to get there with my 79 Opel Manta, enjoy Saturday at the wondefull beaches. On Sunday it will be the race and Monday morning i will also be visiting some beaches to get some sun.

so it is mini vacations and racing.
my GT friend will probably give me his GT to race it as well, so it will be awesome!

pls take some time to watch the nice video regarding the island of Rodos (aka "the island of the knights" and the Rodos port was hosting the Colossos of Rodos one of the 7 wonders of the world)

so, here's some analysis.
the course will be very tight

Manta: estimated 180hp, rwd, no differential lock, no ESP, no ABS, no Traction, handbreak not easy to use to block the wheel, NOT upgraded brakes. the last one will be my major problem, coz it still has the very small brakes of the 70HP factory edition..

GT: estimated 320hp, Trifecta tune, no other mods. should i race with all electronics off or at competitive mod in order to stand a chance for a decent time?

all tips for a rookie will be appreciated.

here's a video of the previous race held in Rodos and the parking lot it will take place

A 12 hour ferry ride with your Manta! NICE!

Take some pictures/video.

But most of all GOOD LUCK and ENJOY!

I did some auto-X at the Myrtle Beach Speedway, but GXPsy Rose won the trophy! :yay:

You already know this, but it takes PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and PATIENCE.

When they let you walk the track, use all the time they give you. Also walk it along your planned racing line. When you're in the car, be sure to try and focus your eyes on where you're going, not where you are, look into the next corner. Also, don't worry about hitting cones, if you're not hitting them from time to time you're not pushing hard enough.

Arabas - they appear to be drifting more than an actual auto-X.  The idea behind an Auto X is to get throughout the course without spinning at all.  Smooth in to a turn, and accelerate out maintain control at all times.

Good advice and good points.

Especially the walking part. I know we did that before running the course.

Critter would know, he's had his car sideways at autocrosses more than anyone else I've seen.

Sorry critter, couldn't let that one get by...

Arabas, thanks for the video!  I enjoyed it!  Good luck to you and your '79 Opel Manta.  It will be a blast for sure and the beaches will certainly add to the fun.  Good luck in your driving!  I am not a racer so I really can't provide any credible advice, but you should really have a blast, and I wish you good luck in the competition!!!

Sweet Indeed!!!  You will have many spirits of Kappa Performance riding vicariously in your passenger seat!  :usa: :urock:

Having served the military forces in the island of Rhodes, and having been there for vacation several times, i must say that it's one of the ''must'' destinations for someone that visits Greece. You'll have a great time for sure George, and of course you'll tape as more as you can as for us to see and admire! Had i known sooner i'd come for sure, at the time i'm still thinking about it. However, it sure is a great opportunity for you and anyone else that comes to have fun and enjoy the auto course and the island! Enjoyed the videos, brought back many memories! Last time i was there on October, and visited most of the places i saw in the video, that had never visited before the previous times, every place there is worth every penny, try to stay longer and tour the island!

Thx for the good words guys and gals!!

U238, i think hitting cones in this particular even will cost me a 5 sec penalty. thx for the tips, i will walk the track to get a good feel of it if they allow it.
how do you think i should run the GT? with esc on or completely off?

Critter, i know it's not like the US auto-X. but it's not drifting either. around here they call it "driving skill race"

if i do better than any Boxster and S2K participating i will be happy. not looking for first places, coz i know i will be impossible

I turn the nannies (ESC, etc) completely off for Auto-X.  For me, its about car control and so I want as much control of the car as I can get.  Also, when I and others forget to do so, we are generally slower.  They like to interfere too much.

The bit I had to really learn was to take the corners slower and more controlled.  I really pushed it too hard for a while.  I learned this brutally when 2KWK4Us car was in the shop and he and I auto-x'd mine at the same event.  He was trying to be careful with someone else's car and ended up going much quicker than me.  Slow can be fast!

for a real tight course, what do you propose for tire pressure? i figured i should have more front grip and less in the rear so as to be more agile in the turns. i tried 26 psi front and 33 psi rear and the Manta feels more drifty now.

experts' proposals?
