Off to Canada's maritime coast for a holiday
« on: June 10, 2011, 07:42:56 PM »
It'll be a few weeks yet but my wife and I are off to Canada's east coast for a drive. Leaving on Canada's birthday and we're gone for 17 days. Taking the Solstice of course and packing light will no doubt be the order of the day.

Gonna visit all but Newfoundland and Labrador. As much as I had planned on going there, there isn't the time. When I retire in a few years we're gonna have to do this again.

Going to travel through the U.S. going there and through Canada coming back. As I'm in Ontario Canada heading east, there should be no shortage of things to see along the way.

Any lesser known must sees along the way?
Just trying to do my part...

Mods: Lose the chicklets, VentureShield, Dual horns, AfterShock spoiler, Weathershield cover, Lil Chromies, Red calipers with black Solstice stickers, Opel GT antenna and Solo GXP-RCD exhaust with a Solo hi-flow cat!

It's been 40 years or so since I lived in Antigonish, N.S., so I hesitate recommending anything...but, I remember desolate, pristine beaches all along the coast from Antigonish to Cape Breton.  And if they still exist, the sea-run brook trout ("salters", 5-10 lbs) were worth trying for.

Of course, well-known attractions like Peggy's Cove near Halifax, and the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton should not be missed.

The south coast is filled with quaint fishing villages.

Have fun, and watch out for moose on the Trans-Canada...they treat headlights aggressively!

Thanks! Jackknife, my wife lived out there in Dartmouth about the same time.

DEFINITELY doing the Cabot Trail and any other great road out there I find. I have to go through my National Geographic "Drives of a Lifetime" book and see what else pops up. Whale watching in the Bay of Fundy is also on my list.

SO looking forward to the trip.

There's a great music festival that focuses on green/sustainability out in Heatherton/Antigonish in the 3rd week of July every year.  If you're of that sort, it's definitely worth checking out.  Easy camping, great music of all genres from singer/songwriter, jam bands, hip-hop, and then as it get's dark into the night, DJing stuff of all kinds like techno, house, drum and bass, dubstep, etc.

As always, lots of great lobster/seafood.  In general, good camping (not too buggy when I've attended the music fest), great scenery right from the highway.

Watch out for Moose, especially at dusk.  And top up whenever you can in NB as it can be very far between gas stations, especially 24 hour ones.

I did the drive in 2008. Did it return on the CDN side due to business needs at the time. You will love it and it makes you appreciate how great a country we live in. Drive safe!!!! :)
