One thing that seems to be overlooked in this misfire is the condition under which the car was driven several miles before trying to pass a vehicle.  High performance engines can get fouled with carbon while running at low speed for an extended time.  This can cause a misfire when under hard acceleration.  When the carbon is burned off or blown out, the engine is cleared of much of the carbon and the the misfire under hard acceleration is gone. The smoke that you saw was a mixture of unburnt fuel and carbon.  If engines are not cleaned out once and a while, the excess carbon on the pistons can start to glow, eventually burning a hole in the piston or causing cylinder damage during long distance travel.  Quality of fuel will also have a bearing on the carbon buildup in an engine.

I read the thread Steve but that didn't look like you. It IS a beautiful drive and the Cape Breton National park has lots to see as well. We took a several hour walk yesterday to the Skyline lookout. What an awesome place. The drive is only part of the adventure.

I have to update the other thread but need to get the pictures off the camera first. Too busy driving now.
