Hood Design - What do you want!!! - Poll - Vote Please
« on: February 11, 2009, 04:54:22 PM »
New Poll With Pics all added to this post.
As you all know, there are two hoods currently on the market for our Solstice, one from RK Sport and Norms dual inlet and triple outlet hood.  I'm really not a fan of either, so If there is enough interest, I am going to produce my own hood.  This is just a feeler thread where I want to, post some pics, see what you guys want, see what you guys like, and then make a decision to see if it is actually feasible.  By me doing this, I'm not trying to make tons of money, I just want to make a product people will buy.   I have one great idea, I don't know if it will work for sure yet, but I will explain further later.

Just to let you know a little about this undertaking, an excellent friend, whom I raced motorcycles with for 15 years, is a fiberglass man by trade.  We have worked together on many custom projects over the years, so he is defiantly up for the task.  I will post a couple pics of the shop where he works, so you can see it is a legit fiberglass shop producing high quality products, Not just us working out of our Garage.

The next few pics are hoods people have posted on the BB in different hood threads.  These are the ones everyone seemed to like.  Please post your opinions on them.  Now for my big idea.  I have spoken to my fiberglass guy and he seems to think it is feasible.  It is not for sure until we really research it, but it is what i am going to shoot for.  there are two creases on our hood.  I have been thinking of making a mold where we can set in different hood scoop molds.  Maybe the one in the first pic, maybe the one in the second pic, and then a stock hood but in glass to save weight.  To start, I will concentrate on whichever hood gets the most nods.  To sum it up, we will have one mold with different hood scoop options, thus making several products available easier.

One thing that also needs to be covered, is materials and and cost.  I have spoken with my guy and told him I only want to use the highest quality materials.  He explained things to me about resins that would make your head spin.  But rest assured, we will use only the best. We know heat is a big deal and will be using some cool  materials.  He has made thousands of fiberglass parts for cars and motorcycles since he has been in business so he understands what it takes.  As for cost, the RK hood retails for $1100.  I am guessing people have purchased it for less.  What would you guys be willing to pay, assuming quality is equal to, if not better than anything currently on the market.  I was thinking of shooting for $1000 shipped to you.  Is this reasonable?

As I mentioned earlier, This is just a feeler thread to see if I want to take on the challenge and to see what kind of support I can expect from potential forum members.  Please be kind in your responses, as I am thinking of doing this for the betterment of the community.  I am not doing this to try and get rich, I have an awesome day job.  if I get some good feedback here, I will post this same thread on the BB.

All right on to the pics!!  P.S. the red car is RX4thesol's ride.  IMO, it has the best body on the forum. IMO, I like the black/Deep hood.  Also, If you have another pic of a great hood everyone likes, please post it.

Since the orange hood didn't get a vote on the other thread, I left it off.  The Jazz hood is pictured for reference only to the vents on top.  If more designs come up, I'll add them to the poll.  This poll is setup where you can change your mind until the thread is locked.  Once you have voted, if you want to change your mind, click the Remove Vote on the poll and then pick your new choice.

I love the white one with the blue stripes...that probably looks even better in person!  Who's Solstice is that?  I really, really like the creativity there!

I agree.  If not this combo then i think the Jazz Ribbed Vents on top combined with the Viper vents might look pretty cool

I like the red Solstice with the wide dual white stripe and the single scoop on the hood.  Very nice.  It would look classy on my Aggressive GXP.

Now, Yamatr3 you say you changed your choice to viper hood...but which one? lol

Original Viper Hood, or Viper + Jazz or Viper+Jazz+Red car w/ single Scoop?

I have been looking for a hood that has a "turbo hump" over the turbo side of the engine, something very subtle, almost a factory look...a good example is the 81 turbo firebird but on the other side of the hood.  Uhhgg, I'm terrible at giving a description, but I think you know that I mean.  Could even have those louvers on it or, a cowl induction effect.

(Image removed from quote.)

Yea, I like the Viper but without the Jazz section.  The Jazz makes it a little too busy.
Also, the scoop needs to be functional and tied into a CAI and sealed.

Here is what I posted in the other thread before we closed it,

Well, here's my 2  cents on being functional.  Almost all the hoods pictured would allow for air to get into the hood thus bringing temps down.  Now as for them directing air right into the air box inlet, thats going to be a ton of work and considerably more expensive especially if I have to do one for each brand of cold air intake, plus the GXP and NA.  Now I would have to get a NA car and a GXP car and do several sets of under hood ducting, plus I want one for my for my V8 car too.  So if I went with my original idea of doing two styles of hood, I would end up with like 8 molds.  8 molds is considerably more money and work than I am looking to get into.  If you guys would be happy with just getting air in, then I will only have three molds thus making it more reasonable.  I can also have a outlet vent option that people could decide if they want, maybe similar to the transformer car and the ones I have on my car now..

A couple people have also said they do not want water to get under the hood while raining.  That is workable if the car is just sitting still, but not workable if you are driving down the road and do not want any water to get in.  It would be easy to seal the vents to have a non-functional hood and that could be an option.

So chime in again. Thanks!

I agree with Frank, the Viper hood looks really good.
If deep gxp could do the photoshop using the same color as the car.
The RED and Gray just do not show it well.

I think it could be offered for the OEM intake only for both GXP and N.A.
The location of it is almost the same, certainly the size of the intake is almost identical on both cars.
As far as the rain issue we could just copy the RAM AIR functionality from the GTO and apply it to this hood.

White w/ dual scoops (blue) style and they don't have to be functional
For me it's a cosmetic enhancement.
And no.....the color(s) would be different....don't think a white hood w/ Blue dual scoops would look good on BRAZEN.....
