DIY HID Projector Headlight Retro Fit
« on: February 11, 2009, 08:44:34 PM »
I've been doing some research and it not horribly expensive nor too complicated to retro fit your own headlights with projectors. For a HID Projector Retro fit would cost $250-400 to make and a Projectot Retro Fit with stock bulbs would cost $150-300. But if you use your own headlights you can save $100-200. When I get some extra cash I am seriously considering it.

Here's a video showing you how to do it basically, and what some of the other retro fits look like

Here's a site that give more info retrofitting

I thinking about giving this a shot. Quality parts to do this are not cheap though. I've got a few ideas in my head. I will have to find a spare headlight to try it on though. I'm not gonna cut up mine. Just in case it doesn't look as good as I imagine it will. I've seen a few sol headlight retros. Some look great, and some not so much.

I've started on my Retrofit. I still have a ways to go, but here's some teaser pics. I'm putting the turn signal in the headlight housing with fx-35 type bi-xenon projectors.

Here's an update on my lights. they're coming along pretty nicely. I hope to have them finished before NASSM. It's going slower than I had anticipated, but they will probably be done by next weekend. I'm putting in some LEDs as a mix between the halo look and the audi look.  The LEDs are fairly bright. The first pic has the projector and the LEDs lit. The second has just the LEDs lit. The camera kind of compensated for the light shining into the lens, That's why they look so different.

I like the power supply that you are using, I thought maybe I was the only one that's done that.

I finally got these projectors done up to a point that they are installed. I still have to clean up the wiring, but they are on the car and lit. One of the lenses is not as clear as I would like it to be, so I might get another one and re-do it. What do you think? The LEDs around the projectors are switched separately along with the rings around the fog lights. The turn signals are chrome bullet LED motorcycle lights placed inside the headlight housing. I'll try to get some output pattern shots tonight when it gets dark.

When it got dark out, I pulled the car out to aim the lights. Here's some night shots.

Just the LEDs lit

The glare the camera pics up does not do these light any justice. They look sweeet in person.

All  together I spent between 5 and 6 hundred bucks on this mod. This includes all the new parts, as well as a used pair of stock headlights. It took me a few weeks to put these together, but I did some experimenting along the way. If I were to do it again; it would still take a week. there's time needed for paint and glues to dry at various stages of the build.
