High Flow Cat or Down Pipe
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:04:18 PM »
Can anyone give me some info on how much louder the GXP is with a high flow cat or down pipe? I am running a magnaflo exhaust system.

I have a Solo high-flow cat with a Magnaflow.  It's a little louder than with the stock cat, but not unpleasantly so.  From the cabin, it seems about 25% louder.  The Magnaflow emphasizes the low frequencies, so the noise increase might be a lot more obnoxious if you had a higher-pitched exhaust.

If you need a HF cat, mine is for sale! :)

Street race and HF cat was my last setup. it was pretty loud. With the magnaflow it will be considerably less loud than mine. So if you want more noise from your magnaflow, slap on the HF! If you buy a used one you can always resell it

I've run a stock Redline with the Magnaflow, and it was not much louder than stock but sounded great. Once I moved into SP class, I installed a downpipe with the Magnaflow. "Loud" is similar to "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". It was still well under SCCA dB maximum limits. For the last couple of year I have run a downpipe into a full 3" Solo Performance single pipe system with only a 14" open S.P. resonator. STILL under SCCA dB maximums, but is louder for sure. But, if I am not mashing the gas, it's fine. Keep in mind, on the LNF engines the turbo is a VERY effective muffler in its own right. If it was a 2.4 with the same exhaust it would be a skull crusher.

For me, Solo HF cat recently installed with a magnaflow exhaust, I find the loudness is mostly on starting the car. Once it settles in (few minutes) its a perfect low rumble on the drive. Compared to Stock, yeah its louder but in a better way and not annoying to my neighbors (too much)

I have the solo hi flow cat and magnaflow.
I love it. Sounds awesome and is not too loud

I thought the magnaflow with the stock cat was a little too quiet.

I'm a big fan of the stock Redline tips.  Due to my tune, it's a little rich on tip in (just a little safety and lessens KR, and even helps to take out a little lag), and no cat, my tips are always darkened.  And on the stock tips, it looks badass.

Anyways, if I wanted to go with a magnaflow muffler with the stock tips, does magnaflow sell just the muffler?  I'd weld it in myself.

They sell mufflers in all different shapes and sizes. I have an oval one on my jeep that is really small so i could tuck it up tight and out of the way of my upper control arm

A HF cat will make the exhaust about 20% louder.  The catless downpipe is more in the range of 30-35%.

Thanks to everyone for posting. I am not looking for something that will be very loud. Increased performance  (for my not so distant Trifecta tune) with a little rumble is fine. What I don't want is something that will be heard a mile away...and draw "unwanted" attention!

Brazen, IMHO a solo HF cat with stock exhaust is the best combination for a nice rumble and just a little bit of noise.

For those of you with a high flow cat, which one do you have and how is it holding up. Seems a few years back there was one that was not lasting very long but I can't remember who made it. Correct me if I am remembering incorrectly. I know MRZ and Solo make one. Anyone else?

Performance Autowerks also makes them.... (Werks)

I think around a year ago, someone had an issue with the Solo HF cat. They claim that it blow their engine.. Check with the Kappa forum's by searching for details or someone can charm in on this situation....

They corrected themselves later that it was not the cat that did it.......
