Sky/GT bumper air duct opening final product, pics and price
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:42:32 AM »
i always thought that the Sky/GT bumper have "room" for aesthetical mods..

i had an idea about a product, but my limited skills don't allow me to make it myself.

i was wondering if any vendor has any interest in making a product like the following, available for all Sky/GT owners:

the Sky bumper has the chrome-mesh piece which also has the air duct opening for the brake cooling. this piece is fitted on the bumper with three screws.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

IMHO, a bumper air duct opening from abs plastic could easily take the place of this entire piece, without any mesh, just a big aggressive gap on the bumper, similar to this

similar design is on the Lexus ISF

if anyone is interested or has the skills to make it, i m interested!!

Would be nice to have it extended a little to eliminate the tube that tends to get knocked around.

I actually have not had the tubes in mine since I had my front bumper repainted.  Body shop never put them in and I never noticed until Mr.Burns was putting the bumper back on after the intercooler install.

I have mad Skillz
just none that apply to fiberglass.
:D

I think this is a great Idea.  maybe DDM could tie it into their Brake Ducting they did for Kenny

You could probably buy one or two funnels, out the center of the stock piece leaving just a small inch to half inch perimeter, cut to shape the new funnel then attach it to a small perimeter left on the stock piece. Probably faster and easier than trying to make one that would fit the stock spot with the offset attach points it has.

If they werent so much damn money to screw around with and possibly scrap if theres a mess up, Id buy some to make some up.

You have the right Idea . I think Advance Auto has some different shape funnels. I'v gotten One that was a rectangle w/ the outlet on one side . the top was about 3-4 inch x 6-8 inch <--- just guestament in size. Might be able to use a couple to fit one side.

Didn't make my self clear, by saying that what you want is on my future plans i meant the front bumper. You can do it yourself, believe me it's not that hard, you just have to make a mold and then you are on your way....

I LOVE this!!!!  it is so awesome to see people still solving problems, modding and creating new and improved ideas for a platform that has been cancelled since 2009.  Very cool guys!  keep it up!  I've been toiling on-and-off with my lotus diffuser plate/rear valence-delete project and i can honestly say it's not going so well...  (clearance issues)  so major KUDOS to all of you making an extreme effort for the KAPPA!

ok, back on topic...

I don't think this will make a huge difference, not even the racing Kappas bothered to do it. But they do use brake ducts like I have.

Kenny, it's not a performance mod. as i stated in my first post, this is an aesthetical mod.
the opening on the bumper will be bigger, thus i suspect more air pressure, but the tube that leads to the brakes will be the factory piece, so no change in diameter, ths no change in the amount of air.
it's a small mod for even better looks (depending on the taste of each and every one).

tomorrow i will pick up the samples from the shop to do a test fitting and if everything is OK, they will be painted and fitted on.
i will certainly start a thread when i have them in my hands.

Elff, you can not extend them to reach the opening on the wheel well, coz this would make it extremely difficult to remove or put on the bumper if needed. the tubes from the bumper opening to the wheel well, must be there for practical reasons of bumper fitting. i suggext you pick up some tubes and fit them in place since you have lost the factory ones

i just got the sample to test fit on the bumper.
it seems to fit perfect, so tommorow i ll take it to the shop to start making the final product.

the guy that is making it thinks i should have it painted gun metal, i insist on black.
opinions about the colour are appreciated appreciated.
opinions on the product itself also appreciated.

I REALLY like it!  I think it's going to look very 'aggressive.'  Not sure if i can install this on my N/A though..  I have the chrome 'spars' that run across that area. Although I've always wanted to delete them.   Thoughts?

Get a redline bumper and add these.

Arabas.  I really don't think the stock ducts do much and I have larger rotors and 6 piston calipers, so what I lost in air cooling, I more than made up for in heat dissapation and grabbing power.

The stock ducts may not do much as-is.. But if you use them as an opening to pull air from and build an attachment for the knuckle for a hose to attach to it could be very functional.  With aftermarket 2-piece rotors it is much easier to make a knuckle attachment for brake duct purposes.

And i believe Kenny has 1pc stock replacement rotors.  If you have a bbk that typicaly has 2 piece rotors it is much easier to get air into the hat of the rotor where it is supposed to be, which elff probably has with 6 piston calipers..

The factory rotor makes it super difficult to get air where it's needed which is unfortunate.

i will propably have the air ducts ready by the end of the week. some progress has been done and they look really good.
talked a bit with the fabricator and we will probably start some more aesthetical mods.

he is even trying to arrange a sponsorship for me in order to procceed to a huge exterior mod !!
hope he manages to make it happen!!!
