Topic: Is the TR6060 or T56 Magnum possible?

Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a Tremtec T56 Magnum, or TR6060 as it's known in the Camaro, into the Kappa with a V8 conversion?

I've been speaking via email with Dave from Performance Autowerks, and he tells me that their DIY kit requires a T56 out of an '04-'06 GTO. 

The T56 Magnum is such a substantial upgrade to the T56, that I'd really like to be able to use one instead, and it could potentially make finding the engine for my V8 swap plan quite a bit easier. 

My plan is to find a low mileage full-pull LS3+transmission out of a fifth gen Camaro, do a bit of engine work, and make roughly 525 HP at the crank.  I know that the TR6060 in the Camaro is a de-tuned version of the T56 Magnum, but it is still an upgrade from a T56.  However, it seems like everyone selling a pulled LS3 will only sell it with the TR6060.

So, if the Werks DIY kit won't work, I guess the question is why, and is there anything that I can do to make it work other than have someone put a custom fabbed GTO tail on a T56 Magnum?  I know some of the GTO guys are going this route rather than building up a T56 to Magnum standards, so it's not like that would be new territory, but putting one in a Kappa probably is.

From what I've heard it's just the shifter location that makes the GTO T56 the way to go, so if you can get a GTO location shifter onto a TR6060 or Magnum I would expect you would be good.  That'd be a pretty nice setup, good luck!

We have been giving customers the option of using the T56 or the TR6060 on V8 swaps for about a year now. There are differences in how they mount, shifter mounts, etc. but if you want to do it, it can be done. One of the V8's at the shop right now has a TR6060 and the next one is also getting one.

Yes, you get a TR6060 to work in the Kappa chassis just fine, we offer it as an option on our in house conversions as well and yes parts needs to be swapped in order for the TR6060 to work in the Kappa chassis.  For ease of installation for the DIY customer we suggest the 04-06 GTO transmission as it lines up perfectly using our mounts included in the DIY kit.

Thanks, guys.  I'm currently (and slowly) calculating costs, pros/cons, and potential timelines for a comparison between the LNF and a V8 swap on DIY work for the HP/TQ I'd like. 

I found a company that makes a drop-in T56 Magnum conversion for the GTO, so I could probably do that if I wanted.  It's mostly a matter of how much money I want to spend, I think.

This peaked my interest so I did a bunch of research. 
Seems like the T56 can have thicker gears and be more forgiving on a missed shift
That combined with the GTO version fitting our cars pretty well seems like it would be an easier choice.

I could not find anything significantly superior about the TR6060
So whats the reason for people wanting the 6060?

Elff.....I believe here are a few differences:


T56 = 550 ft-lbs capacity

TR6060 600 ft-lbs capacity
It has fine-pitch splines on the upgraded synchros for reduced friction.  In addition, it  has wider/stronger two piece gears w/ machined clutch teeth

Advantages of the T56 Magnum include:

Triple-cone synchronizers on gears 1-4, double-cone synchronizers on 5th, 6th and reverse. 
Larger bearings.
Stronger countershaft.
Narrower, fine-tooth synchronizers for shorter shift throws and better feel.
Better shift forks.
Tremtec rating of 700 ft-lbs of torque, though many people will tell you it won't break until after more than 950 ft-lbs.

Dropping a T56 Magnum, 1K ft-lb capable drive shaft, and 1K ft-lbs capable axles, and as long as the differential doesn't grenade  , you can pretty much pick whatever you want for a V8 and not ever have to worry about the drive train.

However, all of those advantages = $$$

werks or ddm if you guys could enlighten on how har it would be to use a tr6060 vs the got t56. also werks if i bought you DIY kit would i be able to use a tr6060 wit relative ease.

Tick Performance will stuff TR6060 guts in a T-56 case. They can even cryo treat and do other upgrades.

Daves, how about a TR6070 from the Z51 Vet? Same rations as the T-56 plus an extra OverDrive... add the 2.91, 3.23, 3.43 3.73 gear in the diff, could be interesting!

If I can haz a 7 speed, may be I'll finally just drop in this IRS 8.8 ford E-diff I've been sitting on...
