iPad/ Galaxy Tab S 10.5 install
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:10:27 AM »
Ever since I sat in a Tesla S with its huge center touchscreen infotainment center I fell in love with the idea of incorporating a 10" tablet into our cars. I hadn't thought about it much since then. But, I was listening to music on youtube last night when I stumbled on a video to install an ipad in cars from a company called Soundman out in CA.

The "slider" kit they make is pretty sweet along with amps and other accessories to fully integrate a tablet system and possibly removing the car HU altogether. I'm not an iPad user as I prefer Samsung's Galaxy Tabs. I currently have the Tab S 10.5 and love it especially the expandable memory (SD card slot).

I'm thinking of replacing the entire vertical console in the car to accommodate a tablet install. I need to take some measurements and draw some sketches. I don't like the dash mounts and such because they aren't "clean" installs. So, would anyone else be interested in something like this?

I'd certainly be interested in seeing how this works out but how are you going to find the room to integrate it with the climate controls in the middle of everything?

YEAH baby!  I've seen a couple of threads of the BB about doing this with a smaller tablet. Usually there have been downsides, though.  The radio part is always difficult. As is integrating with the GMLAN (chimes/Onstar) and steering wheel controls.

Very interested in seeing an install that has no downsides (obviously, other than the work involved).

You could get rid of the climate controls all together and have virtual controls on the touchscreen, is there an app for that?

I was thinking of relocating the climate controls to the left and orient them vertically.

What do you consider downsides? Do you want to remove the in dash radio completely? My steering wheel controls don't work now (not that I care). So, I wasn't considering integrating steering wheel control functions.
