Speaker upgrade and sub enclosure
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:25:17 PM »
One of the other mods I have been working on is upgrading the stock door speakers, a solution to the muffled behind the seats speakers, and a sub enclosure for just a bit more bump.

First the sub box.  Basicly drew out and measured the area under the glove box and transposed the measurements onto the wood and cut out, screwed and glued, covered in carpet, dropped in the speaker and there you have it.  Honestly it not quiet the recommended air space for a standard 10" enclosure but it's just enough to get that added lower end boost.  It is powered by a 200W, 2channel amp mounted behind the driver seat.  I thought I took a picture of that but I guess not.  I'll add one later.  The high to low converter behind the passenger seat spliced off the monsoon sub wires to the new amp also.

Still waiting on the speaker cover to come in for protection.  I obviously can't stretch my feet out  to the fuse kick plate but feet flat on the floor is only about 3 to 4 inches closer to the seat and comfortable for me at 5'9".

Next are the door speakers.

All these are still running of the factory monsoon 7 system amp.

In keeping with the Blue Demon theme, I went with dual illumination 6.5 door speakers. cut out the fake grill of the door panels and install.  The hard part to these was running the additional power wires through the door loom for the illumination.  Fortunatly I was doing the lambo hinges at the same time so the fenders were off making the access easier.

Day light shot

Night shot illuminated

Now the rear speakers.

What I decided to do since I rarly used it for anything else was to replace the waterfall storage door with a fiberglass one and install a single 4" speaker wired to both left and right rears to get all stereo seperated sounds into one speaker, and two one inch tweeters.  These are all the dual iluminations also.

Fabing the new door was not as bad as I thought is would be having never fiberglassed before.  Having an actual piece to mold was a lifesaver also.  I seperated the top piece of the door assembly adn wrapped it in wax paper and then in plastic wrap.  From that point I simply started to layer the resin and fiber cloth in repeating order intil I felt I had a good thinkness.  Once dried, the original simply pealed out the back.  I them placed the original on top of the fiberglass piece and traced aound it.  Trimmed it down and sanded to the traced line, test fitting the waterfall as I went.  One I did end up having to do is use the outer edge of the inner door piece by cutting out the middle to use as a spacer so the fiber piece stayed flush to teh waterfall surface.

Cut the holes, sand out, paint and install.  I used screws to mount it cause I want to be able to remove the door if need be but may fill the holes and bond it in perminently in time.  Big difference in rear sound and great with the top down.

She's 5'7".  She doesn't know it yet, but she will be taking up Yoga very soon  .

She hasn't even seen it in the car yet or the doors up but she's not in it much.  Doesn't handle corners to well.

I suppose I could.  I didn't want to hide the reality fact that doing this stuff is a major mess.

I'm suprised I haven't started getting the mickey mouse club jokes yet.  It was the first thing that popped into my head after I cut out the speaker holes but it was the only wayt they would fit.  I almost put a 6.5 in the door and the tweets in the upper waterfall but opted not to cut into that area.  A new OEM door and it is all back to stock this way.

I like the little speakers in the center. I'm going to be taking my sub from the floor like yours and moving it to the center of the car.
Everything looks  pretty clean. well done.

I wanted to originaly place like a ten inch sub in the center like the viper but the fab work was just to costly and not a cheap reversion if it went badly.  So far, no passengers have complaned about not having enough room.
