Phone Pocket
« on: December 23, 2018, 07:45:27 PM »
Working on something I haven’t seen done before.  I don’t get on the boards nearly as much as I used to, though.  Now that I’ve started, it seems like such an obvious idea...

No clue why the thumbnail shows upside-down.  If I click, it goes right side up on my devices.  I can re-post if it’s not working right for anyone...

That is one strange photo, I had to use 3 different photo editors to get the thumbnail and the full photo to align correctly.  Then I discovered I don't have the required permissions to attach the photo on this forum.

Oh well . . .

Picassa was the editor that worked on a resave.

Fixed the pic for you, not sure what the issue was but love the idea.
Tell us more about the slot for the phone?

Thanks, Sly Bob!

The phone slot is more or less one of those mods born from necessity.  I finally broke down and bought an aftermarket head unit so I could have CarPlay and Android Auto - thus giving me the ability to run Waze on the”big screen.”  There’s only one unit on the market that will do CarPlay over WiFi, and that one is too rich for my blood.  So I needed a place to plug in and a place to stash a smart phone without the cord being awkward.

If I had a 3D printer and the requisite skill set, that would probably be the way to go for this project.  Instead I’m using fiberglass and epoxy.  It looks rough right now because it’s still a work in-progress.  I started with a rear cup holder delete panel (part number 15845105), and went from there.  I’ll smooth it up and “flock” it for a suede-like appearance.

I’ve also ordered a honeycomb-texture black silicone mat that I’ll cut to fit the compartment.  That combined with the fact that it slopes downward toward the rear should hopefully be enough to keep my new phone from smashing my new head unit under heavy braking.

Finally, I’ve incorporated a USB port that leads to the new head unit. To do that, I used a 90-degree USB adapter I had laying around.  This way I can still easily remove the bulkhead panel thanks to a quick disconnect.

Looking good so far. Final prep and flocking should fix it up and the mat inside is a great idea. Wish I had CarPlay and android auto on my head unit. Love the sound of mine but it's old now and maybe I should be shopping around for an upgrade.
Is the CarPlay and AA wireless on the head unit you bought?

Dammit Wood Wizard!  You could've sidestepped the 'blank' panel and made the face out out ebony!

Alpine may make the only wireless option for CarPlay right now.  That unit is ~$700.  I got a Kenwood (DMX7705S) for about half the price.  I’m disappointed with how bad the screen washes out and glares, though.  Not sure the Alpine would have been any better.

Don’t think I didn’t consider it.  I did make the mold for the compartment from some scrap mahogany!

Kept working on this despite my potential ticking time bomb LNF (see “does this look normal?” thread).

Overall I’m pleased with how it came out  :D. Maybe next week I’ll get back to driving the car and enjoy my new stereo and place to stash my phone.

If I’m REALLY lucky, my HVAC controls will behave from now on, too.  Oh, and the replacement subwoofer won’t shit the bed like the Monsoon one just did...

Long story long, my Solstice tried real hard to reject the stereo transplant with three coincidental failures I initially assessed to be self-induced electrical gremlins.

But this thread is about the good thing.  Here’s some pics

Thanks, Joe.

I'll do my best to not eject the phone with my right FOOT.  Elbow shouldn't be an issue.  I actually traded Treeman my cupholders for his blockout plate years ago anyway.  I always found those to be even more useless than the "main" cupholder (which I also never use).  The cheapo bent wire "kappa korral" has always been my go-to.

Good idea/job. Is the inside of the pocket lined with some non-skid material to keep the phone in the pocket during braking?

It’s flocked, but that’s not a ton of good for anti-skid.  I ordered a rubber mat on Amazon before Christmas.  Should be here from China someday soon.  I’ll trim it to size, and it should do the trick.  I’ve also made the pocket itself slope down toward the rear of the car slightly.

Hobby Lobby is your friend for non-skid rubber in various thickness.  That is where I went to line my gun safe.

You lined your gun safe at Hobby Lobby?  Wasn't that kind of heavy to carry in there?

I was thinking the same thing!  Seems like it would be so much easier to just buy the rubber stuff and bring it TO the gun safe!

Plus, did you take the guns OUT of the gun safe BEFORE taking it to Hobby Lobby?  I know they're a pretty conservative company and all, but most businesses don't take too kindly to someone carrying an arsenal into the store.

Phfff, anyone can do that.  It takes a man do do it in the store.  Boy did I get some looks
