Topic: Burnout Black Marks

I had a Solstice internet buddy stop in Saturday. Sol4362. He is from Kalamazoo, but his and his wife's parents live just around the corner from us. I've never met him before face to face. While I was mowing, he drove by, and I instantly knew who he was. He waved, and then I did. He turned around and stopped in to say HI. We introduced, and then I introduced him to LadyT and "Lucy". He has had his Solstice since '06 (low 4 digit VIN#), but has never even gone for a ride in a GXP (2.0L turbo), let alone one that has been tuned. So, what's a guy to do! WE WENT FOR A RIDE!!!

Long story short, I did a burnout for him.  The cloud of smoke was thick. The nice double black marks are mine.    I went back today to get some pics before they get washed away.



This pic kinda sucks, as I zoomed in and it distorted the pic'. The black marks are in reality probably 400 feet long, and it stopped burning rubber when I let off on the gas. All we both could say was "WOW"! I've NEVER done a burnout like this, EVER. Next time I'll just keep going and see how long it can go, and I'll take a video camera and a tape measure for sure. BTW, this was in front of a buddies house. He lives in an adult foster home. SORRY people!

That's awesome, did you end up shifting in the middle of it?

Looks like a good area to mess around with no chance of anything bad happening.
I tend to play around and drift when I find fun areas like that.
But no pics.

It was quite the ride.  Yes, it is a good place to mess around a little bit with acres and acres of fields on either side and perfectly straight.

It was very nice to finally meet Wayne and Theresa (hope i spelled her name correctly).  The wife is now sick of hearing about me wanting to add some type of forced induction to my 2.4.  Thanks again Wayne.

To answer a couple of your questions (just in case Wayne doesn't check in for a while):

1.  He has an automatic, so it did its own thing per shifting.  Traction control was off.
2.  He is running the stock gs-d2's for tires.

SO how is this done with a manual?  Do you ride the brake?

I'm in the process to learn this also on my manual Opel, looks hard for me after 12 years of driving only FWDs
1st gear, get off the clutch as fast as possible and right foot pressing gas and brake in the same time, you have to play gentle with both with only one foot.

I'm doing it corectly?

With my supercharged 2.4, I just dump the clutch at 4k, floor it, and hang on for dear life

That's what I do critter. Especially the hang on for dear life part. I have so much torque in the rear that it just wants to keep coming around which is great for doing donuts. But when I try to go in a straight line it comes out looking like zipper teeth.

What they said, if you feel like you are grabbing traction, blip the clutch.
This allows the engine to rev up again then spin the wheels.
The professional drifters do that in turn and you will hear the engine sounding like it is bouncing off the rev limiter.

You guys inspired me today.  I was giving a co-worker a ride and decided to drift a nice 90 degree turn.
Downshifted to second, held clutch, got RPMS nice and high. Dropped clutch and did my flick.
We slid though the turn super smooth with a ton of wheel spin at around 45mph.

elff Basically you are saying instead of balancing between brake and gas to keep it there, to do the balance it between clutch and gas?

I practice 90 or 180 degree turns but from standing still and from 1st gear, too afraid yet to do in 2nd, I can't find spots for that. The hardest part is the end of it how to settle it nice and gentle in the direction aimed. Again this is on me cause I was driving only fwd but PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE is the key I think.

LadyT28 I bet he will be the one to buy the new set for both to enjoy, try to do how men are doing with the ladies, don't read the first words and everything will be ok

The Vette had to be braking.  He was at a stand still most of the time.  When you guys burn out in the Solstice, I assume you shut off Traction Control and your are not in competitive mode.   What the hell is the difference between Traction Control and Cometitive Mode, anyway?

He was at least modulating the gas because you can hear it.
But with him not moving, you have to be correct.

Competitive mode removes traction control and enhances the stability control for "Spirited Driving"
Unless it's raining, I have the car in competitive mode all the time.  Works good for drifting and for AutoX

I can't keep mine in competitive mode, I think because of traffic and my style of driving, If I get into competitive, each turn or line change will be a drift and I don't want to do that.

About burnouts i think will be easier for me after installing the tune cause I will have a lot more torque. Getting back to you elff, I was about to do it in the way you said but my fellows said that I will shorten my clutch's life a lot and they advised me to keep it between brake and gas.
