Shifting from 3rd to 4th
« on: July 04, 2009, 08:57:51 AM »
Most of the time when I'm out driving I can only be aggressive from 1st through 3rd gear and then I hit a stop sign, a light, or a slower car and have to ease up or stop. In the case of being behind a slower car then I casually shift into 4th without any problem and cruise along until my next opportunity to start all over again. Sometimes when I do get the opportunity to floor it and go all the way from 1st through 4th without stopping I have gotten hung up trying to go into 4th. It's not a transmission problem, it's more like a me problem. With that one particular gear change when trying to do it quickly I guess I tend to pull the shifter down and to the left a bit causing the shaft to hit something instead of going into gear. I've never done that on any of my other manual transmission cars and was just wondering if anybody else has experienced the same thing with their Kappa.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, you sort of successfully stated the problem and then diagnosed it. If the lever isn't put where it belongs, it can't do what needs to be done.

How are you gripping the knob? (can just see the jokes coming from this one)....

Are you gripping from the side, with your knuckles facing the passenger side?  If so, try gripping from the top or gripping from the inside with your palm facing the passenger side.

Or just practice a bit taking the shift from 3rd to 4th a little slower until you get better at pulling it straight down.

it may be nerves....i mean that .......wot 1st to second, wooo hooo,.... wot 2nd to 3rd, yeah boy wow this car is fast.....then wot from  3rd to 4th.......ummmm sh1T i am way over the speed limit, hope i don't get caught, or have a woodchuck cross the road or that guy in the other lane cut me offf.........then grind bing zzzzzzzz, clank into gear.....my professional opinion as a non certified sh1t talker is your phychi is distracting you from the task at hand(shifting) as you are about to break the law, and/or drive unsafely on public roads.....either lose your concience, or keep it to the track   .......or practice practice practice.....get the jpm shifter, gives better feell of what you are doing. imho

I asked to see if by chance anyone else has the same problem since I've never encountered it before on any other car. Maybe the shift gates are narrower than typical? I don't know. It's a curiosity only. I'm not looking for any solutions. Obviously, I need to adapt to the car.

You could be right. Like I said, it's only sometimes. I've noticed it maybe 3 or 4 times. The last time was just yesterday and it got me wondering.

I do "grip the knob" knuckles facing the passenger side which does likely contribute.

I found out about two weeks ago that I have the same problem. I was on a 1/4 mile track and I missed my  shift from third to fourth two times. I saw my rpm's hit 8000! OUCH!!! But, I do understand your dilemma.

Stop thinking it will happen. Solved just about all my shifting issues at the track.. Til I broke the shifter links. Which is a PTC issue not a Sol/Sky issue(read my sig)..

2nd to 3rd is the one i have issues with and I hear about most.. Don't worry just time will solve it..
LiquidPT has the Mysterious GXP Coupe, I drive the tool wagon the modded 03 PT GT Stage? yes its fast....

I have two reccomendations that may help, get a JPM shifter it is shorter and just the shorter throw helps, I also changed the transmission fluid from stock to Royal Purple and it shifts smoother.

LG, do you remember the fluid type and capacity when you changed your trany fluid?  Was thinking of doing the same and can't seem to find the answers.  Thanks!

From the shop manual.

Manual trans fluid API AI-A or GL-3 SAE 75W-90 GM P/N 89021806 (Canadian P/N 89021807)  2.6 Liters or 2.75 Quarts.

I put in Royal Purple Synchromax, got is at Pep boys but it's easy to find on line, I noticed a little difference right away but as time went by the improvement seemed to increase, I like it.

Synchromax is a manual transmission fluid that increases performance and the life of your equipment. It improves shifting, reduces gear noise and increases power transfer to the wheels. It also lowers operating temperatures and provides outstanding wear protection for longer transmission life.

Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automatic transmission fluid. It’s also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials. It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.

Synchromax is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec technology for unsurpassed performance and protection.

Hey if it's it's good enough for Rhys Millen it's good enough for me, he runs it in his new Hot Rod Hyundai (new sponsor) ran Mobil 1 in the Solstice (or at least had the stickers on the car). They actually do run the Royal Purple in the car.
