Crank relearn...looking for options
« on: July 22, 2009, 07:01:37 PM »
As I understand it...when replacing the ECM (install one with an after market tune), I would need to have a crank relearn done.  Is there any way to have this performed without going to the GM Dealership and have their technicians do it?

Where are you located?  Like 1KULSOL said.  Anyone with a Dash Hawk can perform this for  you.    Just takes a minute.

Like DBG said, I would be happy to help if you are close. You can do it with HP Tuners too. Where are you? Anyone with a Tech II can do it some larger repair shops have them, most dealers do it for free. Just drive in with the CEL lite and play dumb, they reset it and off you go.

This is precisely why everyone should consider putting their location in their profile.

Help would be so much easier to come by...

Doesn't this prevent the car from starting?

I wonder if Rev will add this ability to their software.  Now that would be cool.

Nope, it just light's a CEL on the NA. I had a tune done on my NA and that was all it did, I did the relearn with the Dashawk, but I know a lot of people who just drove in the dealer with the light on a said I have a CEL, dealer checks it with Tech II see's the error, does the relearn and away they go. Usually no charge and never left the service lane. If you have a CEL the first thing most dealers do is read it to see what it is so they can write it up correctly, if they can clear it they usually do. Loose gas cap causes more CEL's than anything else, they don't want to write you up for a loose gas cap.

Whats involved with a crank relearn?  Is this just clearing a code like can be done with Aeroforce gauges?

here you go straight from the DashHawk manual

CASE Relearn
CASE Relearn is the Crank Angle Sensor Error relearn procedure. This is necessary if:
_ A P1336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Error DTC is present
_ A brand new PCM is installed
_ The engine crank sensor has been disassembled or replaced
_ The engine balancer and/or timing chain has been removed or replaced
This procedure is prompted with various menus on the DashHawk, but it is VERY IMPORTANT THAT THESE
PROCEDURES BE CAREFULLY UNDERSTOOD AND FOLLOWED CAREFULLY or the CASE relearn may not be
successful.
These procedures are a follows:
1. Be sure the engine coolant temperature is at LEAST 158 degrees F. The DashHawk will check and will not let
you perform the procedure if this condition is not met.
2. Set the Parking Brake and make sure the hood is closed.
3. Turn the engine off for at least 10 seconds.
4. PLACE YOUR FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE. This is VERY important, as the procedure will NOT
work if you do not have the brakes firmly engaged!
5. Go to the Diagnostics Menu->GM Commands->CASE Relearn menu on your DashHawk.
6. Start the vehicle and let the idle stabilize.
7. Follow the prompts on the DashHawk screen. When ready, hit ENTER to initiate the process.
8. When the DashHawk tells you to, steadily rev the engine up to approximately 4000 RPM until you feel the
engine stutter or “top out”.
9. IMMEDIATELY back off the throttle and let it return to idle.
10. Check the DTCs and see if P1336 is present. If not, then the relearn procedure is complete.

His profile say's 06 Sol

My understanding is that the 07 ECM did not require a crank relearn. In fact I am sure of this as I bought a spare ECM from Westers and did not need a relearn.

I think they changed the ECM with the 08 that required the crank relearn.

I would assume a 06 Sol would not require a crank relearn!

Crank relearns are only required on the NA, GXP do not require this procedure so if you get a new ECM from westers, just plug and drive

Thanks for the info and advice...looks like a DaskHawk is the simplest answer as well as a good tool for the "tool box".

The 08 Manual Sky Redlines requires a Clutch relearn as well as the security relearn.

Anybody running a ZZP 1.0 tune? I just finished installing their ECU on my 08 GXP and ran through the security relearn. I was able to get the security light to turn off after the third ten minute key on game, but now it acts as though the clutch is not depressed  which has me depressed.
Turn the key on and everything seems normal, but try to turn the engine over with the clutch held firmly to the floor and.... :banghead: nothing!
If I turn the key to start the engine with my foot off the clutch it does the exact same thing so the Kappa seems to be thinking that the clutch is not in the correct position.

I scanned it and had two codes that will not clear and I'm not sure if they're set on purpose as part of the tune or if they are part of my no engine turn over problem. Here are the codes:

P06642   5 volt reference 1 signal low
P0193 fuel rail pressure sensor circuit signal high

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!

I recently had a code that while not the same as your P0193 was similar (a sensor circuit Signal high) and was caused by a connector the technician had undone and when later reconnecting it did not have it actually fully engaged. When he went over everything that he had done, he found the connector not fully seated. He reseated it and the error went away. Hopefully this helps you.

I wonder if maybe you haven't drained the battery to the point where the BCM won't engage the starter.

Critter may be onto an issue. Of course, SA's suggestion can be easily resolved with a charge. However, you may have "fat thumbed" the second code. Too many digits. I am guessing you meant P0642 which is a partner code for P0193. Some reference found via Google - http://www.traverseforum.com/index.php?topic=1183.0

That said, I can't see how that would stop the car from at least turning over. Somebody else jump in here, but you may have an anti theft issue with an ECU that the car does not recognize. (Disclaimer - I have never done a crank re-learn, so don't know if that will pair the ECU to your car.) It would be helpful to know if the replacement ECU is for a 2008 GXP. If it came out of a 2007 RL/GXP, it may not be compatible with an 08/09.

This may not have anything to do with whats happening .But under the dash there is apeice of gray under dash molding right above the clutch pedel  when its all the way in. The other day I must have moved it when looking for a wire .Anyway I tried to start the car and nothing I checked everything all was OK .good charge on Battery still not even a Click.I started back tracking andlooked under the dash, some how When I pushed the pedel in it was hitting the end of this trim peice. I moved my foot to the right side of the Pedel and pushed the clutch back in and it started right up. I don't know if I moved it or my foot was keeping the pedel from going that extra inch. This happened to me last week.
