Buy used HP Tuners?
« on: August 04, 2009, 09:55:05 AM »
So this guy on Skyforum is selling HP tuners Pro Suite, but for some reason he used a single vehicle license for his Sky which used 2 credits, then 5 more to upgrade to the all vehicles that model year license. Unfortunately, it's a 2008, so I can't use it on my car.

So there is 1 available credit, which means I have to buy 1 credit for $50 bucks just for my car. And if I want to tune other cars, across the future, say a G8 and Corvette, I end up paying exactly the same amount for a brand new system with 8 credits.

How much does he want for it.  Used should never be close to full pricing and like you posted, he tuned his 08 Sky.  You need 6 Credits to do a Sky complete model/year.

12 credits are required to tune a G8 or Corvette for the complete model/year.

Doh forgot to put the price. He wants $300 and has one credit remaining. I think he is trying to find out why it says it's using 5 credits because he never tuned any other car other than his own.

Oh, with only 1 credit left, you would need to spend $250 in credits to be able to do a complete model/year for your 2007 Sky.    He should be selling it for $150 to 200 max.

Here is the rule of thumb for HP tuners, Pro version should be no more than $250 with zero credits, if you need the pro version (I have the Pro version), and it offers very few advantages on the Solstice. The regular version with zero credits should be $95, each credit it $50 so his price for the Pro version is about right, but you don't need the Pro version unless you want to tune other GM vehicles, and even then the biggest thing you can do is live tune the LS motors on the dyno with the engine running. DBG is correct, anything LS-2 and above requires twice as many credits.

The pro version gives you the box with data logging. That's what I was most interested in.

Also in the future I will want to tune a G8 and a Corvette. These are two vehicles that I will eventually own.

If it's a little too much money for Kenny, since he has a 2007
Since I have a 2008 Sky, would it be a decent deal for me?
Looks like it has everything I would need?

No worries Kenny, I wont try and steal it from you.  If you decide to pass and it's a good deal for me, I will then jump on it.

Yea dude, since it'll work on all 2008 sky's it would be a good deal for you.

It's a close call for me because to fill this one with credits makes it equal for the total price. But if I only have to buy one credit for my car. It's cheaper to get started with.

Also I'm not sure if I need the datalogging box. Since i have a laptop I can just keep in the car to log.

I know the pro box also let's you do things like wideband, but i dunno if that is useful at all. I don't really even know what it means :)

I have the Pro version, I know what it does and have never used the data box. I just hook it to my laptop, it was great when I did scans on my sons car and I could look at stuff while he was driving, but the regular version will do that. The live tuning option costs more credits to enable on the Pro version. I don't think I have used a single feature of the Pro, and I have tuned 4 different types of GM vehicles with it. If you have a 2008 Sky it is a very good deal.

I haven't checked lately but 2 years ago when I bought mine it would do it on the LS motor's, remember 95% of the people on the HPT forum have the regular version and don't know what the Pro version will do. The Pro's using HPT talk straight to Bill, like Lyndon does. It requires additional stuff to make it work, I read up on it a long time ago. I will see if I kind find the info.

Here you go right from the HPT web site, they call it real time tuning.

Real Time Tuning (RTT™)
Applications: 1999+ Gen3 V8 (Most Operating Systems)

RTT™ is an enhanced operating system that allows real time modification of selected parameters in the PCM's calibration. Parameters are updated via customized OBD2 commands in real time using the existing OBD2 port. No need to remove the PCM or run any separate cabling. The user can select various operation "modes" that defines which tables are enabled for RTT™. The RTT™ system is primarily controlled by VCM Scanner and, when enabled, tables can be modified in real time via the integrated RTT™ user interface. After tuning is complete, the final tune can be written to the PCM and stored permanently using regular editor processes.

HP Tuners RTT™ is an excellent way to tune selected vehicle parameters in real time, without the high cost and inconvenience of dedicated hardware solutions.

Does the GXP have a wide band?  the N/A's as a norm don't, some like mine have one added. :)

This is what the website says the pro version has.

What does the MPVI Pro interface allow me to do over the Standard Version?

With our Pro interface, you can integrate 0-5v signals from various sensors such as EGT, Wide Band, fuel pressure and others right into our scanner. You will have real time data from those sensors right next to your standard scan tool data such as TPS, RPM, MPH, etc.

Our MPVI Pro interface also has black box data datalogging of up to 1hr 30mins built in. What this means is you are able to scan your vehicle without the use of a laptop using the interfaces record button. You can then take the interface into your home to transfer the log contents from the interface to the computer. If you have an MPVI Pro it will require no hardware modification. Also note that VCM Scanner comes with both interfaces regardless as it is part of our VCM Suite package.

I just talked to hafizmo, he has the 2007 Sky license, so this is a much better deal for me if it's $300

Ok so the original seller has 5 credits available. doesn't make sense since it comes with 8 and he should have only used 2 for his vehicle. for $300 this sounds like a better deal now.

BUT it is true that I do not need the pro. So maybe I'll hold off and try to find a better deal

No you don't need the pro, but you'll probably want it because it can log data without a laptop. In the end its a pretty handy feature.

Make up your mind Kenny
I got the cash right now to buy it if you don't
 :D

Quick question
Can HP Tuners work with a wireless OBD-II reader or does it need to use a serial to USB cable?
