Rear Diff. question
« on: October 08, 2009, 01:56:02 PM »
Can't make it to the mod meet. The dealer is telling me I need to replace the rear diff. to the tune of $2800 I don't have. They suggested I call corporate which I did. Told them I felt they should replace it since I am only two months out of the three year warranty and I have only 28,000 miles on the car. They called the dealer while I was on hold. The dealer told them they felt Saturn should replace it. Saturn told me someone would get back to me within 24 hours.

So I am wondering, if they won't replace it under warranty, can I take the diff. off? It was an option after all.

No, can't take it off.  Option was whether or not to have
limited slip diferential ( used to be called positraction).  You
need the diferential to both gear and convert motion from
the long axis of the vehicle to perpandicular to the long axis
thereby turning the rear wheels.

I am so sorry and saturn should at least split the bill.  They
really should pay the whole thing since the part is defectve!

I also am having mine replaced on Wednesday

Others will have more info, but I think this is a known problem with some years Kappa?  I think there is a TSB on it as well?  Perhaps it is or will be an NHTSA safety recall and therefor free?

Others chime in here with personal experience or better info?

That's strange, my 07 rear diff and engine have 100k mile warranty by default.  Why not yours?

His car may be an '06 model, 3 year warranty only. I am in the same boat, no warranty.

That is what I have been thinking. It's an '07 and should fall under that 100k warranty. Rear differential is part of the drive train, isn't it?

Did the Google dance - http://www.gm.com/total-confidence/vehicle-warranty/?brandId=gm&src=sch

Your diff should be covered. Here is the excerpt

Drive Systems

Final drive housing, all internal lubricated parts, axle shafts, constant velocity joints, axle housing, propeller shafts, universal joints, wheel bearings, locking hubs, front differential actuator, supports, seals and gaskets.

Thanks for the link but this what the first paragraph says: General Motors will warrant powertrains on 2008 and newer: Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC and Saturn passenger cars, light duty trucks or vans for fully backed, 5 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first**. This warranty will have no deductible, starting from the original in-service date of the vehicle, for warrantable repairs which are required as a result of defects due to material and/or workmanship to the Powertrain components as listed below:

I may be really lost here. GM said a year or two ago that they were grandfathering cars back to . . . 07? when they announced the 100k warranty in 08?

Okay - let's try this ---------

Beyond that, I guess I need to dig into my glove compartment.

Not exactly sure what they cover but at this website it says 5yrs for Drivetrain.
http://www.automotive.com/2007/12/pontiac/solstice/warranty/index.html
Problem is that the owners manual doesn't really say drivetrain but does state something about powertrain in that sensors and the control module are covered but doesn't say anything about the actual powertrain components.

Scan from my warranty booklet that came with my 2007 Solstice GXP.
Also gives a different time frame for the warranty.

What does this have to do with my issue?

None whatsoever with warranty coverage, but if you wanted to upgrade on your $$, this is an option.  Sorry for being insensitive.

Phew! Covered under the power train warranty as I thought it should be. The service person yesterday didn't both to check, so I spoke with the manager today. Part won't be in until Monday, so I'll be missing the mod meet.
